Finding the Domain of a Function

If a function f does not model data or verbal conditions, its domain is the largest set of real numbers for which
the value of f(x) is a real number. Exclude from a function’s domain real numbers that cause division by zero
and real numbers that result in a square root of a negative number.
THERE ARE 3 ITEMS THAT LIMIT THE DOMAIN OF A FUNCTION:

1
Example 1: Find the domain of
5x
g ( x) 
x 2  49

Example 2:

a. ( f + g )( x ) Find domain b. ( f −g ) ( x ) Find domain

c. ( fg)( x ) Find domain d. ( fg )( x ) Find domain

Example 3: Given f ( x )=3 x−4 and g ( x )=x 2−2 x +6 , find each of the following:
a. ( f ∘ g)( x) b. ( g ∘ f )(x) c. ( g ∘ f )(1) d. g( g ( 1 ) )

Example 4:

Example 5: Express the given functions h as a composition of two functions f and g so that h ( x )=¿
A. h ( x )=√3 x 2+1
2
B. h ( x )=( x−6 )2+5
