Furthermore, the Library of Congress named UML as the official repository for ETDs from the U.S. Other concems revolve around sht_and conventional publishers. These issues and others are discussed in the article by Yale Fineman in the Suggested Readings. See also the extensive Guide for Electronic Theses and Dissertations, published by UNESCO on the web at hitp:/www.etdguide.org. Dissertations and theses may or may not have LC subject headings describing the topic of the document. Your local online catalog might have a format limit for them. IF not, use the note in the record, which includes the degree, institution, and date, to devise keyword searches. A doctoral dissertation from the University of Colorado at Boulder from 2005 would have the following note: “Thesis (Ph.D.)—University of Colorado, 2005.” Dissertations and theses are included in several of the tools already covered in earlier chapters. For example, WorldCat (entry 4.12) includes dissertations and many master’s theses not indexed elsewhere. In WorldCat you can limit your search results to “thesis/dissertation” using the subtype limit under “any content” in the Advanced Search option. Some periodical indexes include citations and/or abstracts for disser- ti 1s, while others do not. Of the major music periodical indexes, RILM Abstracts (entry 5.3) and Music Index (entry 5.2) include dissertations, but I/MP (entry 5.1) does not, Examples of other periodical indexes that do include dissertations are America: History and Life (entry 5.18), ERIC (entry 5.20), and MLA International Bibliography (entry 5.24). Some music periodicals include listings of completed dissertations and/or those in progress. These may be published regularly or irregularly. For example, Die Musikforschung includes an annual listing, titled “Im Jahre XXXX angenommene musikwissenschaftliche Dissertationen,” which always appears in Heft 2 (issue number 2) of each volume. See also the web database of the Gesellschaft fiir Musikforschung, at huip://musikwiss.uni-muenster.de, which includes theses in progress. Euhnomusicology has published an annual list of dissertations and theses for the past several years, but it is not always in the same issue. Music Theory Online (MTO) announces dissertations and has a cumulative index of them available online at http://www.societymusictheory, org/mto/mto-dissertations.php. Nuova rivista musicale italiana included bibliographies in volumes 21 (1987), 22 (1988), and 28 (1994), titled “Le tesi in storia della musica dis- cusse nelle universita italiane.” Similarly, the Research Chronicle of the Royal Musical Association includes listings in various volumes, most notably in volumes 3 (1963), 25 (1992), and 27 (1994). These can be very helpful if one is available for the sub- jet you are researching. Examples include two titles by James R. Heintze, American Music Studies: A Classified Bibliography of Master's Theses. (Deteoit, MI: Information ‘Coordinators, 1984) and Jgor Stravinsky: An International Bibliography of Theses and Dissertations, 1925-2000, 2nd ed. (Warten, Ml: Harmonie Park Press, 2001). Another ‘example is Canadian Music and Education: An Annotated Bibliography of Theses and Dissertations by Diane E, Peters (Lanham, MD: Scarecrow, 1997). These all include the subject heading “Dissertations, Academic—Bibliography” and may have a place name as well, eg. “Dissertations, Academic—Canada—Bibliography.” In addition they include a topical heading, e., “Stravinsky Igor, 1882-1971—Bibliography.” The LC call numbers will vary, as Uhese do, although all are in the bibliographies range. ML120 s for bibliographies by place: ML128 is for bibliographies by topic; and MLI34 for those about composers. Research tools specifically dedicated to dissertations and theses are listed next. Be sure also to search WorldCat, RILM Abstracts, and Music Index, as mentioned earlier. “Musie-specitic guides ar listed first followed by general sources.
