Importance of marriages and impact of Covid

India is a land where marriages are considered pious, it is an amalgamation of not only two
people or two families but two cultures. It is therefore not very surprising that the wedding
industry in India is estimated to be worth Rs. 3 lakh crores. The major reason for the same
being the mentality which makes wedding functions an easy way of showing-off publicly.
According to an article by BBC, Indians spend anything between $6,000 to $13,000 for a
modest wedding and the cost can raise up to $1 million for lavish affairs. The industry was
thus witnessing a 25% yearly growth pre-pandemic.

COVID, however, has hit the wedding industry badly. Due to the curbs in place regarding the
number of people allowed in a social gathering, the marriages have become more of an
intimate affair. Most of the marriages are postponed and the ones happening have cut down
on the budget drastically. According to an article on idiva.com – 27% of the weddings
scheduled for 2020 were postponed and of the ones which happened, a quarter cut down their
budget by 26% and another quarter further cut it by 49%. The concept of low-waste weddings
is also being adopted which is leading to a shorter guest list.
