Module 6: Lesson 2 Pre-Task

BSP3D September 11, 2021

QUESTIONS:

1. Discuss the relationship between Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism.
2. Are there surgical interventions feasible for VTE? Discuss your answer.
3. Give different ways on how VTE can be prevented.

ANSWERS:

1. The relationship between Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism is blood
clots are called deep vein thrombosis or DVT and it is often develops in the deep leg
veins. While, the Pulmonary Embolism or PE, it occurs when clots break off from
vein walls and travel along the heart to the pulmonary arteries.
2. There are surgical interventions that are feasible for VTE and this is involved in
placing a filter in the body's largest vein or in the inferior vena cava, to prevent
blood clots, traveling to the lungs. It can also involve in removing a large blood clot
from the vein or injecting clot-busting medicines into the vein or lung artery.
3. There are 2 ways on how VTE can be prevented. In Non-pharmacologic way, it
includes improving venous blood flow by mechanical means and it contains early
ambulation, graduated compression stockings, IPC devices, and inferior vena cava
filters. While in Pharmacologic way, it is inhibiting clotting factor activity or
production. Suitably selected therapies can significantly reduce the incidence of VTE
after hip and knee replacement, hip fracture repair, general surgery, myocardial
infarction, ischemic stroke, and in appropriately selected hospitalized medical
patients.
