ix) School history
National Type Secondary School Tanah Puteh, Kuantan started at 1936 when a
few members of Chinese Manufacturing Hall Kuantan had succeeded to establish a school
that was located at No.1, Jalan Bukit Ubi, Kuantan. Then, another school named Wah
Khiaw School was established under the support of a Hokkien Club. Later at 1946 a few
educated scholars established one more Chinese school named Chung Kuok School that
was placed in Padang Lalang, Kuantan. Unfortunately, at May of 1948, the school that
was located in Bukit Ubi was closed due to the Declaration of Emergency. Due to that,
there were only two schools left after the era of war that was Sekolah Wah Khiaw dan
Sekolah Chung Kuok. Starting from 1952, the two schools were combined together.

However, the buildings were scattered at three places with the main block located
at Jalan Bukit Ubi. Starting from that year the school received financial support from the
government and the teachers were paid high salary. At 1956, there was 38 classes that
had almost 1800 students. Due to lack of classes, the school was forced to borrow money
from the Chinese Manufacture Hall, Hokkien Club and Kwong Siew Club. To overcome
the problems, the department of school was established at 1957. Datuk Lim Hoe Lek and
Datuk Lim became the chairman of the department and lended $20,000 to the school. The
first headmaster of SMJK Tanah Puteh was Encik Tan Kok Pah that had worked from
1961 to 1979. This school was called SM Chung Hwa from 1956 to 1961 that was located
at Jalan Bukit Ubi, it was then moved to Alor Akar and called SM Alor Akar. At 1968,
the school was moved to Jalan Tanah Putih and was called SMJK Tanah Puteh until now.
For the past 30 years, the number of students in SMJKTP had increased. So, with the help
of the government, at 2002 SMJKTP added two new blocks that consists of labs and
classrooms. At 2004, the school had been completed with computer rooms. At 2016, all
of the infrastructure of the school was completed. On 3th September 2016 the front gate
of SMJKTP was launched as a landmark of SMJKTP.

Questions 16 to 25

Read the following book reviews and answer the questions that follow.

The most popular holiday places in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur
Take a short walk or jump on the extensive train network and you can see the
delights of numerous cultures. A shopping haven for shopaholics. Interesting
sights such as the Petronas Towers, the Perdana Lake Gardens, and the Menara
KL Tower provide plenty of enjoyable experience to all.

Penang
The colonial city of Georgetown was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site and
has plenty to offer in the way of museums, a seaside fort, historic homes, and
most importantly, a famous street- food scene.

Malacca
Malaysia's Peranakan city of Malacca is a worthwhile stop for cultural, historical,
and colonial sites. UNESCO even declared Malacca a World Heritage Site in 2008.
The relaxed vibe is pleasant enough to keep people around for a few days. The
close proximity to Kuala Lumpur makes getting there by bus easy.

Taman Negara
Taman Negara literally means "national park" in Malay. Taman Negara is
Malaysia's oldest national park and is considered to be one of the world's oldest
tropical rainforests. A long canopy walkway gives visitors a chance to see life
high in the trees that normally isn't visible from the ground.

Selangor
Here you'll find a Formula One racetrack, the National Zoo, and enormous theme
parks. Selangor is busy and booming; shopping malls sprawl in many directions.
When you're ready to be wooed by nature, the abundance of fireflies along the
river in Kuala Selangor is a dazzling spectacle worth seeing!

The Living Photograph

My small grandmother is tall there,
Straight-back, white broderie anglaise shirt,
Pleated skirt, flat shoes, grey bun,
A kind, old smile round her eyes.
Her big hand holds mine,
White hand in black hand.
Her Sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye.

It was true after all : that look

My tall gransmother became small
Her back round and hunched
Her soup forgot to boil
She went to the awful place grandmothers go
Somewhere unknown, unthinkable.

But there she is still,

In the photo with me at three,

vii. Curriculum expenses

For this year 2021, the government had allocated RM6478.42 for English Language
subject. 25% of the money was used for Photostat uses that is RM 1619.60. Due to the
pandemic, no funds were used for teaching mediums. The balance left in the system for
English language is RM9120.01.

viii. Curriculum monitoring

My mentor is an English Language teacher at SMJK Tanah Puteh. He teaches English

Language for Form 4 and Form 5 students. He is a very detailed and hardworking teacher.
He also taught me English when I am studying in SMJKTP. The reason I said that he is a
very detailed teacher is because he prepares thoroughly before the class starts and explains
the things that the students are going to learn before the class starts. He prepares a slide with
detailed information for students to have a better understanding before the class starts. He
also teaches very interactively with the students. He gives time for the students to answer the
worksheet given and discusses the answer with them. He chooses students to answer certain
questions to ensure all the students stay alert during the class. He uses technology in the class
which is online blackboard to keep up student’s interest during this pandemic. The worksheet
given is also very fun and exciting since it’s about a film review. He asks the students to
watch the movie Skyfall on the last lesson and reviews the film with them during this class.
Furthermore, he asks the students to write a synopsis, cast and review of their favourite movie.
This action can let the students learn English in a not boring and fun way. I had learned a lot
during this class. Sometimes, he explains the hard words on the exercises and translates them
to Malay for the students to have a better understanding.

2.0) Conclusion Of School Environment and Culture

Based on my observation in SMJK Tanah Puteh, the environment and culture of the
school is very comfortable and nice. Firstly, the infrastructure of the school is fully completed
and are all functioning in excellent condition. The toilets are very large, clean, spacious and
near to students classroom making it very convenient to the students. The students don’t need
to walk a long way and queue infront of the toilet. Moreover, the school is surrounded by a
lot of plants and trees making the air flow very nice and comfortable for the students. Enough
intake of oxygen can make the students mind clearer and function in good state. The flora
and fauna planted around the school is also very eye pleasing, students will feel less stressed
and more relaxed when passing by these plants. The security of the school is very secured
since there are two guard houses. Prefects will also guard the front gate and canteen gate
when the students enter the school to check whether students brought dangerous objects to
school. There are a lot of murals, posters and signboards all around the school that have a lot
of quotes, motivation sentences and beautiful artworks on it. When students walk pass the
hallways, study area and resting area they will feel very motivated and happy by the quotes
and artworks. Furthermore, the meaning of school badge, vision, mission, school information,
discipline rules and school motto is also on the board. Students can gain knowledge
unconsciously when they scroll along the school. There is a primary school opposite this
school, so the traffic will be a bit heavy in the morning. There is two fields for the students
to play sports, carry out activities and co-curricular activities. The school area is very big, all
the classrooms are very spacious and comfortable, students are able the study peacefully and
prepare for their exams in a quiet zone. Moreover, the school has just implemented a new
technology system that is the attendance fingerprint and face scanner. Students are required
to scan their fingerprint and face when they enter the school just like teachers to ensure the
attendance is real. The school also prepared water supply stations, students can refill their
water bottle and get hydrated all the time. The schools learning environment is very crucial
to the students well-being and achievements. When observing how the teacher teaches in the
classroom, I found out that the teacher really cares about the students and wants them to do
well. All the students feel comfortable to ask questions, make mistakes and take risks in order
to learn something new. The teacher takes interest in each student's strengths and interests,
as well as their struggles and frustrations. When the students see that their teacher can learn

87
from his or her mistakes, and laugh even in times when he or she feels frustrated, the students
will feel much more comfortable to do the same. The school also implements collaborative
relationships between the teachers, staffs and parents. By creating collaborative relationships,
the school can gain a greater depth of knowledge regarding student’s needs and abilities and
implement new teaching practices to maximise teaching and learning. When relationships
are built on trust, students and parents can play an active role within the learning environment
and teachers and staff can work together to develop a learning environment that caters for
and celebrates diversity. Consequently everyone feels a sense of belonging and
empowerment because with relationships comes an understanding of the other’s needs,
interests and concerns. Moreover, the teacher also uses different and interesting medias and
technologies during the class to increase students interest and attention to the class.

Culture is a critical component of any learning environment. It is important to be

aware of the influence of culture within any particular learning context, and to try and shape
that culture as much as possible towards supporting the kind of learning environment to be
most effective. Students and teachers consists of different races yet still interact comfortably
together. All the teachers from different races and religions also work and cooperate together
without any probles and conflict. Next, there are three canteens that represents each race that
is Indian, Chinese and Malay. Every student gets to try local foods from each canteen. All
the students are mixed up in the canteen, there are no sign of racism in SMJKTP. Although
there are more Chinese students in SMJKTP, there is still a mosque for the Malay students
to pray. Furthermore, everytime there is a important examination, the school will plan a
blessing ceremony of knowledge. Every race will pray separately according to their religion
but there will all gather together and shake hands with all the teachers at the hall to get their
blessings for the exam. Next culture that this school cultivates is there is mutual respect
between teacher and students, and especially between students. Students are able to openly
give their differing views and opinions during the class. Teacher gives the recognition and
respect for the personalities of each student in the class. The whole atmosphere of the class
either its online or face to face is very interactive and engaging. Moreover, all of the students
were treated equally no matter the academic or status level. All students are given the same
facilities, same exam format and same priorities. There is transparency in all the assessments,
students will get to know about the rubrics and criteria of their assessments so there won’t be

88
any unfair or biased situations. This school also values student’s talents as it always conducts
some performances and competitions of various catergories. For example, competitions like
School Got Talent Competition, Innovative Technology Design Competition and many more.
The school doesn’t force all the students to mainly focus on academics, for art stream students,
they were given more opportunities on art and sport aspects. They were given chances to
show their talent by painting murals, creating artworks and beautifying the school gallery.
All the students from different streams and different classes were treated as important in the
school.

SMJK Tanah Puteh had already achieved a very high standard of school learning
environment and culture, all the teachers and students are very satisfied and grateful to be
able to teach and learn in this school. Although this school is almost perfect, there is still
some ways to improve the environment of the school. Firstly, the public telephones prepared
at the school should be fixed because some are broken. Moreover, the library and Brass Band
room need to be more spacious since there are a lot of books and music instruments to be
allocated. The teacher’s office should also be bigger since there are a lot of new teachers.
Next, ways to improve the culture of the school is a positive school culture should be
implemented for both staff and students. Success, joy, and accomplishment are all main features
of a positive school culture. When the school has a positive culture, teachers are excited to work
because they see the bigger picture, and students are in a better position both mentally and
emotionally to learn. For example, the school should celebrate more of the students and teachers
achievements whether it’s a big or small occasion. Next, the school should help out the poor
students in the school by raising funds and donations for them usually in these hard times. The
students will feel the warmth from the school by these acts of kindness.

3.0) Analysis Of The Relationship Of School Environment Culture With The
National Philosophy Of Education

Education in Malaysia is an on-going effort towards further developing the potential

of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner, so as to produce individuals who are
intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically balanced and harmonious, based on a
firm belief in and devotion to God. Such an effort is designed to produce Malaysian citizens
who are knowledgeable and competent, who possess high moral standards, and who are
responsible and capable of achieving high level of personal well-being as well as being able
to contribute to the harmony and betterment of the family, the society and the nation at large.
School plays a very important role in realization of National Philosophy of education. It is
one and the only one stage that can provide an environment which enables the development
of a student’s cognitive, affective and physical with other potentials (JERIS). Besides
providing a suitable environment, school also act as the medium for teaching and learning
process to be happened by providing place to study and educators, hold different event and
programme to enrich the student knowledge and mould their talents. Furthermore, school
also act as the basic society for the student to get knowing how they can survive in such a
challenging world.

The first aim of National Philosophy of Education is to believe and have devotion to
God. We must believe and accept the existing of God according to our own beliefs. In
Malaysia, there are several of races and religions that have been practiced by different group
of people or community because we live in one unified country. This school had achieved
this aim for preparing a mosque for the Muslim students to pray. The school also tries really
hard to cultivate our religious belief through many activities and ceremonies including
religious club and associations like Islamic Club, Buddhist Club and Christian Club. The
school ensures all the students have some kind of religious beliefs so that students will have
strong moral principles in their life that lead them to the right path. Moral and Civic subject
also teaches students how to behave morally with the correct attitude in their daily life. Belief
in and devoting to God is one of the important aspects. Belief concerns the human confidence
that the surrounding environment that does not exists but provided by the God. The law of

90
nature is actually the Law of God. Thus individuals should exemplify devotions; trust a
responsibility to the God in respect of efforts to administer and develop the environment.

The second aim is being responsible to the society and nation in order produce
individuals that are responsible to full-fill their duties as a good citizen. The school teachers
must carry out the responsibility as far as they can and being a good role model for anyone
else. The teachers should feel a sense of responsibility to try their best to cultivate a
comfortable and sustainable learning environment for their students in order to create
individuals of not only high academic levels but also nice personalities. Students will
unconsciously imitate the behaviours and attitudes of their class teachers, so it is very
important for the teachers to keep in mind how important it is for them to keep a hardworking,
polite and responsible attitude especially when talking to other teachers. SMJK Tanah Puteh
is a school that cares a lot about culture and always takes every races celebration very
seriously. For instance, Chinese New Year Celebration becomes an annual celebration in the
school. Chinese New Year Celebration program in school aimed to practice the Chinese
culture and to prevent the Chinese tradition from being extinguish. Every year before Chinese
New Year holiday started, SMJK Tanah Puteh will prepare a lot of activites like New Year
Song Singing Competitions, Calligraphy Writing Competition, Lion Dance Performance and
24 Drums performance. Besides preventing the Chinese culture to be extinguished, these
activities also helps to develop and enrich the student’s talent. This Chinese New Year
Celebration contains the following elements in National Philosophy of Education as it helps
in development of individual potentials, producing responsible Malaysian citizens and
Malaysian citizens who are able to contribute to the harmony and betterment of family,
society and nation at large. Individual potentials such as calligraphy writing, signing and
musical instruments skills can be developed and enriched through the activities done during
Chinese New Year Celebrations. Besides that the responsible value can be implant in the
Chinese younger generations as they are the one who is responsible to keep their tradition
and culture last longer. For the other races, they will have better understand towards Chinese
culture. With better understanding of each races culture, a harmony and better nation can be
found.

91
The third aim was reducing the gap in various fields through provision adequate
education facilities to less fortunate in terms of providing an equal education and facilities.
SMJK Tanah Puteh has successfully reduced the gap of students with different academic and
economic levels. All the students in SMJK Tanah Puteh were treated equally. For an example,
all the students were given the same classrooms and same facilities of the school. No
priorities were given for the higher status students or students with a wealthy economic
family background.

The next aim was being tolerance to foster unity among people of various races
especially in Malaysia in order to produce individuals that understand and practice the
National Principles. For instance, all students should abide the National Principles that have
been created and practiced by all Malaysian. Although the students in SMJK Tanah Puteh
are mostly Chinese but there are still some Malay and Indian students. Teachers will try to
mix the students with different races for them to learn to cooperate and tolerate with each
other. There are a lot of chances for the students to practice unity among students with a
different race especially during team works and club activities. Racial harmony can be
achieved through the practice of proper attitude such as tolerance, cooperation, mutual
respect and foster unity among various races in the school to promote the harmonious and
peaceful of the nation. The harmonious environments will help in the development of the
economy and advancement of all fields. Harmonious environment encourage investor to
invest in our country and also the blooming of our tourism industry.

The last aim for National Philosophy of Education was to develop individual’s
potential and improve their self-development as well into the highest level in terms of five
important elements which are physically balanced, emotionally, spiritually, intellectual and
social. Based on my observation, the school focused on developing each students potential
and talents. For example, the school held a lot of competitions, activities, ceremonies and
performances to let the students have a chance to display and practice their hidden talents.
For increasing the physical ability of the students, the school prepared a lot of sports activities
including Sports Day, Cross- country Run activity, Unity Sports Championship, Run for
Peace and State level competitions. There is also physical checks every year for every
students to ensure every students in SMJK Tanah Puteh is healthy and active in sports.

92
Secondly, the school had always taken care of the student’s emotional status by preparing
two School Counselling Rooms for the students to go when they need emotional relief. The
counsellors in the school are very kind and willing to help the students in need. Moreover,
the counsellors will prepare a psychometric test for every Form to check on their emotional
status every year. Thirdly, for the spiritual aspect, the school always prepares different
activities according to the student’s race and religion such as Building Inner Character
Programme and some religious programmes. Next, for the intellectual aspect, the school has
prepared many intense study programmes for the students especially the ones who are facing
important exams like the HIP programme, study week and SPM accelerate extra classes.
Lastly, for the social aspect, the students will have plenty chances to make new friends during
all the activities and co-curricular activities. Students will have a chance to improve their
social and leadership skills when they conduct or participate in an activity or club
associations. One of the activities done by SMJK Tanah Puteh in the school is integrated
units of uniformed camping (Perkhemahan Bersepadu Unit Beruniform). This activity is
important because it can develop the student to be more active and teach student to be more
cooperative when doing task with their group, to build confidence, and help students know
the important of solidarity between races. This activity is not only important between students
and students but also between teachers and student because it can rebuild strong relationship
between them. During this camping also, students can show their talent such as backwoods
cooking, and show their skill based on their instinct to survive in a forest, setting up a tent
and more. Students that have being chose as a leader in the integrated uniform also can show
their leader skill. In other words, this activity is compromises with the need in JERIS that is
to build and Intellectual, physical, emotional, spiritual and social to helps the students to be
fully developed.
