The calibrated output level is variable from -19 dB to 99 4B in 1-dB steps. Two types of preset facility are provided for rapid and easy operation in measurement and alignment of radio receivers in production lines. The carrier frequency, output level and modulation functions can be remotely controlled with a simple external fixture. This versatile instrument measures only about 10 cm high, 43 cm wide and 25 cm deep, weighing approximately 7 kg. 1.2 CARRIER FREQUENCY Two principles of frequency generation are employed; one direct fundamental oscillation for 30-110 MHz, and another heterodyne down-conversion for 100 kHz-30 MHz. The carrier frequency is always locked to the internal reference crystal oscillator and is settable with resolutions of 100 Hz in 100 kHz - 30 MHz range and 1 kHz in 30-110 MHz range. A 6-digit LED display of the carrier frequency in MHz is provided. An endless rotary switch permits incrementing of the carrier frequency. Twelve keys are used to set the frequency _up and down or to clear in normal mode, and to recall thirt} two predetermined frequencies with output levels and modulation functions in preset mode of operation. 1.3 OUTPUT LEVEL A unique feature is the use of a gle control, 1 dB-step net output attenuator for levels from -19 dB to 99 dB e.m.f (open) circuit voltages in terms of dB above 1 microvolt). A 2-digit LED display of the output level is provided. Precise automatic level control circuits render the provision of a monitoring meter and a set level control unnecessary. Besides, four preset keys are used on occasion to recall four optionally predetermined output levels in the range from 0 dB to 99 4B. 1.4 MODULATION Amplitude modulation and frequency modulation are both derived from the internal 400 Hz/l kHz oscillator, External modulation may also be applied, AM depth and FM deviation are variable up to 60% and up to 100 kHz respectively, and are both indicated on the monitoring meter p ‘ovided on the front panel. 1,3 PRESET The sign 1 generator features a versatile preset capability for carrier frequency, output level and modulation functions (AM/FM and INT/EXT). The preset facility is class ed into two types; (1) “F-L-M Assorted Preset", an original naming for this particular instrument, in which the data of carrier fre- quency (F), output level (L) and modulation functions (M) are assorted together and can be stored and recalled at the same time. Up to thirty-two assorted data can be preset. (2) “Independent Output Level Preset" In addition to the above-mentioned F-L-M assorted preset, four output levels can be stored and recalled 1-2 2G 88 BITS independently of carrier frequency and modulation func- tions. In this case, however, the volume of acceptable F-L-M assorted preset data decreases from 32 to 28 due to the capacity of internal memory device As the memory device (RAM) is battery backed-up, the stored data are retained while turning off the instrument. 1.6 REMOTE CONTROL A 24-p connector on the rear panel provides the remote control function by connecting an appropriate control device. The function includes recall operation of both types of preset data, modulation on/off selection, frequency and output level increment control and frequency up/down,. clear operation. gent 2. Refer to the Safety Precautions pages found at the beginning of this manual. (2) Adjustment of meter mechanical zero With the power switch off, adjust the pointer of the meter to exact zero by turning the mechanical zero adjustment screw just beneath the meter on the front panel. (3) Memory back-up battery Keep the instrument turned on for more than eight hours when the instrument is used first time after unpacking or after long term of storage period. The memory back-up battery built in this instrument is a rechargeable nickel-cadmium cell and is always being re- charged when the instrument is turned on. Normally charged battery will back-up the memory for several weeks, however, a long term of turning off may cause insufficient back-up due to the gradual discharge of the battery. (4) Avoid to apply an external voltage to the OUTPUT connector A DC or AC voltage exceeding 3V may cause the damage of output circuit, An RF Fuse Unit (optionally ordered) is récommended to use for transceiver testing. 3.3 OPERATION MODES The operation of the Model VP-8177A is classified into two modes, one "Normal mode" and the other "Preset mode". In the Normal mode of operation, carrier frequency, output level and modulation functions are controlled independently as a RIS conventional signal generators, The Preset function is further classified into two types, one "F-L-M Assorted Preset” and cic ser "Independent Output Level Preset! In the F-L-M Assorted Preset mode, predetermined data consist of carrier frequency (F), output level (L) and modulation functions (M) are stored into the memory device and can be recalled at the same time by simple addressing keystrokes. As compared with the unique assorted preset feature, the Independent Output Level Preset is rather a supplemental facility g the ease of operation of output level control. Four for impro predetermined values of output level are stored and can be re- called separately from other functions making it easy to modify the output level. Descriptions on each operating procedure will appear as follows. Normal Mode: Frequency control -- Output Level control - one 3.5 Modulation control -- --- 3.7 Preset Mode: F-L-M Assorted Preset - Independent Output Level Preset - BERTI 3.4 FREQUENCY CONTROL (NORMAL MODE) Range selector key a (2) (3) Frequency display Digit selector for incrementing casa / Sree) 2 Intrement control \_Step up keys (4) LStep down keys (4) iClear keys (4) Set MODE switch at 4 position, The mark "AY" stands for "Normal Up/Down" mode of frequency setting. Select desired frequency range by pressing RANGE MHz key. The present range is shown by the position of decimal point in the frequency display. Coarsé tuning Numerals of frequency display except the least significant digit are controlled by four A (step up) keys and four ¥ (step down) keys. When a key is pressed momentarily, the value of the digit right above the key will increase or decrease by 1. If the key is held, the digit will continue to increment or decrement. As the digit passes 9 (incrementing) or 0 (decrementing), the digit to its left will increment or decrement. 364 The bottom row of four keys (CLR) are used to clear the corresponding digit to zero for quick setting of frequency in rounded value (e.g. 1.000 MHz or 96.000 MHz). — NOTES 1, Digit control can be made beyond the specified coverage of this instrument. However, the display will blink if | the setting exceeds the limits of available frequency | range. The blinking will cease by putting back the display within the correct range. There are some margins between specified frequency limit and the frequency displayed without blinking. In this range, output of displayed frequency is available with unguaranteed modulation characteristics | 2. when the instrument is fomed on with the MODE | switch set in AY) position, some irregularity may appear in frequency display. For the most cases zeros will be displayed with blinking and rarely the display will include blanked numeral(s). The blinking can be ceased following the NOTE above. The blanked numeral will be recovered by pressing | the. CLR key of the corresponding digit. For the least significant digit, rotate the INCREMENT control clock- wise for about a half turn. Another easier way to completely recover the normal state, simply make a recall operation by the procedure described in paragraph 3.7. Ae BERT (4) Frequency increment The least significant digit is controlled by means of the INCREMENT rotary switch. Clockwise rotation will increase the frequency and counterclockwise rotation will decrease the frequency by 1 digit at each switch detent. As the switch is rotated repeatedly, the digit changes carrying up or borrow- ing down endlessly. Besides the least significant digit, the second or the third digit (which can also be controlled by step up/down keys as mentioned previously) is selected to allow incremental frequency control. The slide swith right above the rotary switch is used for this purpose. 3,5 OUTPUT LEVEL CONTROL (NORMAL -MODE) Output level display Output connector \ Output control W@ There is only one control knob for normal mode of operation. (Four PRESET keys are used for the Independent Output Levél Preset operation described in paragraph 3.8.) MI The open-circuit output voltage (viz. source e.m.f. behind Zo) is directly read in AB above 1 #V as noted on the front ce panel. e 3-6 lM The output level is controlled by single knob in 1-dB steps from -19 4B (0,112 pV rms) to 99 4B (89.1 mV rms), W The output control has 24 detents per revolution and can be rotated endlessly, therefore, about 4-1/2 turns will cover entire output level range. The resultant output voltage is always directly read by 2-digit display. WH No set level adjustment is required. NOTE When the instrument is turned on with the MODE switch = | in AV position, a zero will be displayed for the most cases. Rarely, however, the display may include blanked numeral(s). To recover the normal state, make a récall operation by the procedure described in paragraph 3.7 or 3.8. 3-7 3.6 MODULATION CONTROL (NORMAL MODE) Modulation meter Meter range selector | -FM deviation control Meter mechanical, zero adjustment -—AM depth control |—Internal modulating frequency selector \ Modulation OFF/ON key External modulating signal input connector / AM/FM | Selector key INT/EXT modulation selector key i The output signals available depending on the modulation controls are as follows. i (1) CW (unmodulated continuous wave) (2) FM (100 kHz maximum deviation) a) Internal modulation by 400 Hz or 1 kHz b) External modulation by external signal from 20 Hz to 100 KHz (3) AM (60% maximum depth) a) Internal modulation by 400 Hz or 1 kHz >) External modulation by external signal from 20 Hz to 10 kHz Note: FM and AM mixed modulation is not available. 3-8 4G a8 8ttg @ CW (continuous wave) Set the OFF/ON key to OFF with the light in the center of the key off, This will cause CW to be obtained regardless of the setting of other keys or controls. Internal modulation Press the INT/EXT key making the center light off, and select internal modulating frequency of 400 Hz or 1 kHz by INT FREQ switch, Set the METER RANGE switch at 100 position, Then press the OFF/ON key making the center Light on. Q) FM Press the AM/FM key making the center light on, and advance the FM control for desired frequency deviation indicated by the meter. The full scale deflection of the meter is 100 kHz. If required, use 30 kHz full scale range by setting the METER RANGE switch. (2) AM Prees the AM/FM key making the center light off, and advance the AM control for desired modulation depth indicated by the meter. For normal 30% AM, it is recommended to use the meter range of 30% full scale. If modulation depth more than 30% is required, set the METER RANGE switch at 100 position and advance the AM control up to 60%. The maximum available AM depth of this instrument is 60%. @ External modulation Press the INT/EXT key making the center light on, and select FM or AM by the AM/FM key. Apply an external modulating signal to the EXT MOD INPUT connector. 3-9 FM and AM controls are also effective for external modula- tion, Input voltage required for 75 kHz FM deviation or.30% AM depth is approximately 1 Vrms. Input impedance is 10 k2 nominally. Note: The maximum allowable input voltage is 44V. Combined DC and peak AC voltage should be within this limit. Less than 2 Vrms without DC component is recommended. ———no TEs ——_—\_—_——, | | 1, The meter indicates FM deviation or AM depth depending on the selected FM dr AM function. | 2. The meter protected against damage caused by over-deflection, however, it is recommended to use the "10" full scale range for only monitoring of the pilot signal level in FM stereo modulation. 3, When applying a composite signal from a stereo modulator, avoid the use of a shielded wire or coaxial cable unless the stereo modulater has i very low output impedance such as 752. ™@ Stereo modulation The outer scale of the meter (100 K#iz full scale) has red marks on 75 kHz and 67.5 kHz points, The 75 kHz deviation corresponds to 100% FM and the 67.5 kHz deviation to 90% FM. When frequency modulated by a composite stereo signal, the 67.5 kHz deviation indicates the specified value of the main channel signal when the pilot signal occupies 10% in order to obtain a deviation of 100%. 3-10 edits B 46 First, set 90% (67.5 kHz deviation) with the main channel (L=R) signal alone and next, set 10% (7.5 kHz deviation) with the pilot signal alone by. selecting the signal of the stereo modulator, and then combine them into 100% (75 kHz devia- tion). It should be noted that the meter does not read 75 kHz for the combined signal. NOTE ——eee | The meter is of an average responding type, and the FM peak deviation has been calibrated by a single sine wave. Therefore, in AM and monaural FM the meter can be directly read as they are modulations by single sine wave, but in modulation by a composite signal, the meter does not respond for the peak value. 3-11 3.7 F-L-M ASSORTED PRESET (A) CAPABILITY The data of carrier frequency (F), output level (L) and modulation functions (M) under the condition described below are stored and recalled. [ee NOTES at the end of the next paragraph 3.8.) 3.8 INDEPENDENT OUTPUT LEVEL PRESET WM This feature is available under the condition that the F-L-M Assorted Preset operation requires 28 or less datd to be preset and four addresses including key [8] (i.e. A) @, B @, GW ana BD) are not assignea. ™@ MODE switch ‘Three-position lever switch, MODE, has two kinds of maz- kings on both sides of its lever: | RCL, AY and STO on the left side of the lever have been quoted throughout the foregoing description. To summarize, AY stands for Normal frequency up/down mode, and STO and RCL are used for store and recall operation of the F-L-M Assorted Preset data. 5 On the other hand, the marking RCL/STO on the right side of the switch lever is used for the Independent Output Level Preset operation. It means that four PRESET keys can be used in upper two positions of the lever switch. In other words, the lever switch selects one of two functions of the WRITE key. With the lever set at its bottom STO position, the WRITE key is used to store the F-L-M Assorted data and at upper two positions (RCL/STO) the WRITE key is used to store the Independent Output Level Preset data. ™ Preset (store) operation (1) Set the MODE switch at either RCL/STO ( AV or RCL on the left side) position. (2) Select a key from four PRESET keys, A through D, and press it making the light in the center of the key on. (3) Display a desired output level to be preset by rotating the output control. 3-19 (4) Press the WRITE key. Mm Example ‘Allocation | Procedure Key | Ovtpet Press | Rotate output control "Press level | key: | to obtain display of: | key: A oaB | OA | ° @® write B | 3043] @8 30 © write c | 6oaB | Me 60 |@ write D | 90aB | @ D 90 @ WRITE ™@ Recall operation Press the key which has been allocated’and stored. For example above, the keys A, B, C and D will recall 0 4B, 30 dB, 60 4B and 90 dB respectively. The center light of the pressed key will be on. ™@ Applications 1) When a particular output level is often required, ‘it is Pi a recommended to preset the value to the most easy-to- use key. (e.g. the rightmost key D.) (2) Even if particular output levels were not required to be preset, it is helpful to preset four typical values as the example above, because any desired output level will be obtained within one rotation of output level control by recalling the nearest preset value. 3-20 wage Mig) . When four addresses including key are used NOTES ————____, Output levels with minus sign (-19 to -1 4B) can not be stored. Pressing the WRITE key while display- ing an output level with minus sign, the sign will be deleted from the display and the voltage without minus sign will be written into the memory. for the F-L-M Assorted Preset operation, four | output PRESET keys, A, B, C and D recall the | output data of assorted preset addressed by [A] [8], Bo. o and respectively. If the store operation of the Independent Output Level | Preset were made, the output data of assorted preset addressed by [i] © ® ana [D & wit be deleted and replaced by newly stored ones. Conversely, if the store operation of the F-L-M Assorted Preset were made using addresses that include key [B], the stored data of the Independent Output Level Preset will be deleted and replace by newly stored ones. Briefly, the memories are commonly used for four addresses including key and four output PRESET keys. | 3-21 143 4, REMOTE CONTROL .1 CAPABILITY The operation of the twelve frequency setting keys, four output preset keys, modulation OFF/ON key, frequency increment and output level rotary switches are remotely controlled as des- cribed below. (1) Recall operation of 32 F-L-M assorted preset data With the MODE switch set in the upper RCL position, the assorted data (Frequency, Output Level and Modulation functions) are recalled by means of twelve keys, A through D and 1 through 8. (2) Recall operation of 4 preset output levels With the MODE switch set in the upper or middle RCL/STO positions, the four preset output levels can be recalled independently of frequency and modulation by means of four PRESET keys, A through D. NOTE: This recall operation cannot be controlled coinciden- tally with the F-L-M assorted preset. (3) Frequency up, down and clear operation With the. MODE switch set in the middle AY position, fre- quency can be controlled by twelve keys as described in the paragraph 3.4 in this manual. (4) Modulation on/off operation Switched just as the same manner as the MODULATION OFF/ON key on the front panel. (5) Frequency increment and output level control Two 24-detent endless rotary switches for frequency incre- ment and 1 dB-step output attenuator are controlled remotely
