Classical formal types in early 19th century Lieder

Caplin developed his formal types and formal functions through study of Classical instrumental music. However, some more recent scholars have attempted to
apply Caplin’s ideas to vocal music of the same period. Here is an example from Stephen Rodgers’ article on “Sentences with Words: Text and Theme-Type in
Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin” (Music Theory Spectrum, spring 2014), illustrating sentence structure in vocal melodies:
