“Sopaipas” by “The Eskuinclis Show”

Felipe Martínez – Valentina Saavedra – Fer Kirkman

Valentina: Hello, hello, hello everyone, welcome back to a new episode of our amazing podcast “Sopaipas by
Eskuinclis Show”. My name is Vale..

Fer: And my name is Fer.

Valentina: Here we talk about inventions that may have changed our lives in a better way. Today’s invention is
something that we usually use to stick and repair multiple things. Today’s special guest is...Guess who?? the
inventor of adhesive tape!

Fer: Wait, wait! Let me do something really quick… If the tape hadn’t been created, I wouldn't have been able
to *scotch sound effect* wrap this gift right now (3rd conditional)

Valentina: Ok, that wasn’t planned at all *technical difficulties sound effect*

Fer: This invention has made people’s lives easier by solving a lot of troubles.

Fer: So, please Richard, be welcome to our amazing podcast. We are going to introduce you a little bit to the
people that don't know you.

Fer: Richard Curley Drew, here with us, is the person who created the adhesive tape more precisely, the Scotch
brand!

Valentina: He actually invented the tape concept in general, because he is the creator of the masking tape and
transparent cellophane tape.

Felipe (Richard): Yep, that’s me. Hi everyone, I’m glad to be here.

Valentina: It’s a pleasure for us to have you here too, Richard. So, we are going to ask you some questions that
we have prepared for this episode, alright?

Felipe (Richard): Sure!

Fer: Ok, let's start with the origin of your idea, quite innovative by the way. (First question): What was going
through your mind when you created this device?

Felipe (Richard): Well, I was working at the 3M company, in the sandpaper apartment. And… I was testing a
freight of sandpaper in a mechanical workshop. There I saw the painters of the cars struggling while painting
without messing up the design. In that moment I realized that there might be a nice solution to resolve that type
of problem. So yeah, that’s when everything started.

Valentina: That is so interesting, I never imagined something like that.

Valentina: About that, (Second question):Did you imagine that the tape was going to have such a huge impact?

Felipe (Richard): Actually no, I never looked for that, but the invention became very successful. I made it to help
painters, but it massified and now it has a lot of uses and designs. I mean, if you carry the tape with you
everywhere you go, I assure you that it will be useful eventually. So yeah, I’m impressed about the impact.

Fer: It might sound funny, but I heard a comical story about how your brand’s name “Scotch” was
created. How did you come up with that name?

Felipe (Richard): Okay, *funny mood* That's a good one. So, I was testing my invention for the first time, and I
gave the tape to the painters that I mentioned before. They tried out my product and they hated it! My first
prototype didn't have glue everywhere, the glue was just on the border side of the tape. Of course, as you may
know, if the plastic of the tape doesn’t have glue, it doesn’t stick. (0 conditional). And I remember exactly what
they said to me “take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!"

Valentina: Oh, I did investigate for the interview, and I found that “scotch” was an insult or a bad word in the
1920-1930s.

Felipe (Richard): Yes, exactly.

Valentina: Hahaha. If you don’t get it, guys, at the time it meant something cheap or something of bad quality.

Fer: The painters would’ve never imagined that your product would be one of the most purchased in the
world…I mean, *funny mood* they called your product trash!

Valentina: Yeah!

Valentina: So, the name sounded so catchy to Richard that he used it for his brand, until today. The rest is
history.

Fer: I was thinking about this random situation, so listen to me...

Valentina: Ok...?

Fer: If you won a 3000 Scotch tapes giveaway, what would you guys tape with it? (2° conditional)

Felipe (Richard):Well, I don’t have to imagine that. I already have that much tape laying around my house
*funnymood*

Fer: That makes sense haha.

Valentina: Alright, there you go again with your silly questions *sitcom laughs*

Valentina: Changing the subject, fun fact; in Argentina, Paraguay, Perú, Ecuador and Chile, the country where
our recording studio is located, we refer to all transparent tapes of any brand with the name “Scotch” pronounced
like “escoch”.

Fer: To any tape no matter if they are not from scotch?

Valentina: Yes, we do it.

Felipe (Richard): Wow, nice fact.

Valentina: So, guys the interview has come to the end.

Felipe (Richard): Oh, what a pity.

Fer: Every good thing has to end. Thank you, Richard for being here today.

Felipe (Richard): Thank you for inviting me.
