“From Brawn to Brains: How Immigration Works for America.” By Pia Orrenius and

Madeline Zavodny.

Immigration has played a fundamental role in shaping the U.S. These immigrant workers

have shown to be a great asset in the U.S economy, more so the highly-educated ones. In the past

years, more specific, the 19th and early 20th century, the low-skilled worker including immigrants

and native Americans would have no problem obtaining a job due to high need for workers in the

agriculture field, but of recent the education level needed to prosper in the U.S. work force has

grown, the workforce of U.S. moved to require the high-skilled work. Highly educated

immigrants filled critical jobs in the science, engineering, information technology and health care

sectors.

There are many controversies about higher educated immigrants has hurt low-skilled

native workers. Nevertheless, studies continue to show the benefits and betterment of the U.S.

economy due to these immigrant workers. High-skilled immigrants’ entrepreneurial activities

have been instrumental in the growth of the U.S. high-tech sector. Immigrants founded 25% of

U.S. high-tech startups between 1995 and 2005.

It is a new day, technology is a big part of life, including the workforce. It brings

efficiency, accuracy and precision. Now it is up the highly-skilled and educated individuals to

man these equipment. The immigrant works have the knowledge and degree to show for it so

they are the one’s taking the jobs. As global growth shifts increasingly to emerging markets,

such as China and India, competition for skilled workers will only increase. The competition for
jobs will only get harder and harder so it is a necessity to earned a higher degree in other to

prosper in the U. S. workforce.
