The Gifts of Wisdom Wisdom’s Part in Creation

8 Does not wisdom call, The LORD created me at the beginning[b] of his work,[c]
and does not understanding raise her voice? the first of his acts of long ago.

On the heights, beside the way, Ages ago I was set up,
at the crossroads she takes her stand; at the first, before the beginning of the earth.

beside the gates in front of the town, When there were no depths I was brought forth,
at the entrance of the portals she cries out: when there were no springs abounding with water.

“To you, O people, I call, 25
Before the mountains had been shaped,
and my cry is to all that live. before the hills, I was brought forth—

O simple ones, learn prudence; when he had not yet made earth and fields,[d]
acquire intelligence, you who lack it. or the world’s first bits of soil.

Hear, for I will speak noble things, When he established the heavens, I was there,
and from my lips will come what is right; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,

for my mouth will utter truth; when he made firm the skies above,
wickedness is an abomination to my lips. when he established the fountains of the deep,

All the words of my mouth are righteous; when he assigned to the sea its limit,
there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. so that the waters might not transgress his command,

They are all straight to one who understands when he marked out the foundations of the earth,

and right to those who find knowledge. then I was beside him, like a master worker;[e]

Take my instruction instead of silver, and I was daily his[f] delight,
and knowledge rather than choice gold; rejoicing before him always,

for wisdom is better than jewels, rejoicing in his inhabited world
and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. and delighting in the human race.

I, wisdom, live with prudence,[a]
and I attain knowledge and discretion. 32
“And now, my children, listen to me:

The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. happy are those who keep my ways.
Pride and arrogance and the way of evil 33
Hear instruction and be wise,
and perverted speech I hate. and do not neglect it.

I have good advice and sound wisdom; 34
Happy is the one who listens to me,
I have insight, I have strength. watching daily at my gates,
15
By me kings reign, waiting beside my doors.
and rulers decree what is just; 35
For whoever finds me finds life

by me rulers rule, and obtains favor from the LORD;
and nobles, all who govern rightly. 36
but those who miss me injure themselves;
17
I love those who love me, all who hate me love death.”
and those who seek me diligently find me.

Another Account of the Creation

In the day that the LORD[a] God made the earth and the heavens, 5 when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no
herb of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to
till the ground; 6 but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground— 7 then the LORD God
formed man from the dust of the ground,[b] and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living
being. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 Out of
the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in
the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

A river flows out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and becomes four branches. 11 The name of the
first is Pishon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 and the gold of that land is
good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one that flows around the
whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the
Euphrates.
