CONTEMPORARY ANTHROPOLOGY

> One definition of self in modern anthropology

characterizes the term in its most general ordinary
and everyday use.
> It focuses on understanding the human condition
in its cultural aspect.
THE SELF EMBEDDED IN CULTURE.

Goldschmidt’s culturally embedded self is motivated by

the “ pursuit of prestige in the context of community
values. “ Belk (1988) identifies the “core self” as that
which is unique to the individual as opposed to traits or
characteristics that are common across family, group,
nation or culture.
