I. Introduction
This assignment was written with the purpose of clarifying and analyzing the
management skills of a manager, namely Pham Huu Duong.
After interviewing and analyzing the manager 's answer about management skills, I
draw conclusions and understand the management skills to apply in life and in my work
in the future.
1. Interpersonal skills
A good manager needs to converge many elements and have the necessary skills to
manage his employees. The most important skill is interpersonal skills. Interpersonal
skill is defined that the ability to communicate with, understand, and motivate both
individuals and group (Griffin, 2018). In a work environment, strong interpersonal
skills are an asset that can help you navigate success in managing individuals and
groups. When employers are hiring, interpersonal skills are one of the top criteria
used to evaluate candidates. Regardless of the type of job you have, it is important to
be able to get along well with co-workers, managers, customers, and vendors.
Interpersonal skills are abilities that can transmute and transpose across every
spectrum of our lives (Terrel, 2019).
Effective managers also have good decision- making skills. Understanding in the
simplest sense, decision-making is the act of choosing between two or more courses
of action. According to Griffin (2018), decision- making skills is the manager’s ability
to correctly recognise and define the problems and opportunities and to then select an
appropriate course of action to solve problems and capitalize on opportunities. When
decisions have to be made, there are several stages that managers often go through to
reach a realistic solution:
Step 3: Evaluate the costs and benefits, or pros and cons, associated with each option.
Step 6: Assess the impact of the decision and modify the course of action as needed
(Doyle, 2020).
No manager makes the right decision all the time but when they make a bad
decision, they usually recognize their mistake quickly and then make good decision to
recover. So do Mr. Duong. He said that at one time he made a bad decision to handle
the export process of a shipment of an electronic component export order by China,
the transportation that caused his problems: transport vehicles have problems leading
to late delivery. To overcome this problem, he negotiated with the shipping company
to come up with the most optimal solution for mutual benefits. That is just a few times
Mr. Duong made bad decisions, but overall, his decisions have brought benefits to the
company. Particularly in the third quarter of 2019, he brought the company 15 deals.
And the last skill most prominent in Mr. Duong is time management skill. Time
management skills refer to the manager’s ability to prioritize work, to work
efficiently, and to delegate appropriately (Griffin, 2018). That mean working
efficiently, and employers in every industry look for staff that can make optimal use
of the time available to them on the job. Saving time saves the organization money
and increases revenue (Doyle, 2019). Time management skills include a variety of
skills that will help you manage your time well and this skill include 7 important
small skills: Organization, Prioritization, Goal- setting, Communication, Planning,
Delegation, Stress management. As already noted, managers face many different
pressures and challenges, so they have to manage their time efficiently to solve all
problems.
Be an import and export manager, Mr. Duong has many things to do, many
problems to solve and many pressures. He said that at one time, he had to work 20
hours per day to complete the project. Besides, he also has to spend his time meeting
customers and partners. Working so hard for a long time will greatly affect the health
and quality of work. Realizing this, he re-arranged his time and set out the target steps
to be achieved in the day, month, year... in order to work properly. Not only that, he
also encourages his employees to manage the time most appropriately by proactively
dividing up the work for each employee.
In the 21st century, the world situation changes due to the wars in the Middle East, the
economy is also affected. Trade wars erupted between economic powers, putting
pressure on newly developing economies. In 2020, a global pandemic named COVID-
19 has caused great damage to the world economy as well as Vietnam. The import and
export process are limited to prevent the spread of epidemic, so it will be very
difficult for export and import management as well as commodity import and export
businesses. Mr. Duong and CJ Group also faced many difficulties. For example, CJ's
subsidiary, CJ CGV due to the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Vietnamese
government issued a social isolation order and closed amusement parks and
entertainment activities, therefore The film freezes resulting in losses in the first 5
months of 2020. Therefore, Mr. Duong will have difficulty importing entertainment
orders but cannot broadcast them at cinema complexes.
Or like the US-China trade war, the Korean CJ Group as well as its subsidiaries are
restricted from exporting and importing to China due to American influence. If
Beijing offers to buy more goods from Washington, including semiconductor chips to
reduce the trade imbalance between the two countries, the export of subsidiary CJ
Olive Network (Korea) to China will surely badly affected by exports to China,
accounting for a quarter of South Korea's exports. So Mr. Duong will have difficulty
exporting electronic components to China even though he works for CJ Vietnam
branch
As an import and export manager, Mr. Duong needs to make decisions or strategies to
limit risks to the company in general and the import and export segment. Mr. Duong
needs to research and capture information on production trends, commercial
consumption ... of customers and partners in order to timely provide directions for
tasks after removing import and export restrictions. password. For a limited time, he
was able to move up the ranks to find new markets or investment locations to regain
profits and reduce risks. Strengthen the implementation of signed trade agreements.
For example, in order to solve difficulties in import-export activities in the coming
time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said it would continue to review and re-
calculate the export and import growth scenario in 2020. exploiting and developing
markets according to groups of products that Vietnam has advantages, especially the
EU market and markets to which Vietnam has signed trade agreements.
IV. Conclusion
Mr. Duong is a good manager. He knows how to manage his time and his employees,
deal with customers and partners skillful, make timely, right decisions to benefit the
company. To become a good manager, Mr. Duong has also been an employee, with his
skills that gradually moved to a managerial position, he understood best what he
needed to do to successfully the position and duties that he was assigned.
After interviewing and analyzing Mr. Duong’s management skills, I learned a lot of
lessons for myself. Firstly, I always have to make myself directly and keep my
opinion, know how to analysis the situations to make the best decision that benefits
me and the business when I go to work. Second, interpersonal skills are an
7
indispensable skill on the road to success, it helps us to create good relationships with
people from managers to employees. An introvert that speaks very few, cares little
about people, and the situation around him will be very difficult to succeed and
connect with other people. Finally, be a student, time management skills are very
necessary to divide the learning time and the most reasonable rest to achieve the
highest efficiency in the learning process.
