A.

Forming of Differential Equation / Elimination of Arbitrary Constant/ s

To find the differential equation or to eliminate the arbitrary constant when the general solution is
given, is to differentiate the equation “n” times, (n is the number of arbitrary constants).
Examples:
A. Find the differential equation of the following:
1. y = x3 + c
2. y = c1ex + c2e-x
3. y = c1x2 + c2x + c3
4. y = c1sin 2x + c2cos 2x
5. All circles with center at (0,0)
B. Obtain the particular solution of y = c1x5 + c2x-1 – ln x for which y = 5 and y′ = 0, when x = 1.

B. SOLUTION OF FIRST ORDER DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION

B.1 Variable Separable:

From the equation:

M dx+ N dy =0

where; M and N are both a function of x and y

If the given equation can be put in the form by separating the variable;
f ( x ) dx+ f ( y ) dy=0

Then the general solution of this type can be obtained by direct integration;
❑ ❑

∫ f ( x ) dx +∫ f ( y ) dy=c
❑ ❑

Example:
1. 2y = 3x y′
2. Solve the equation 2xy y′ = 1 + y2.
