NONETTO Op.77

by GEORGE ONSLOW

George Onslow was boni in Clermont-Ferrand in 1784, the son of a French

mother and an English father, and grandson of the first Lord Onslow. He
lived in London as a young man and studied the piano with Hililmandel,
Dussek and Cramer, becoming quite a fine player. He settled m Clermont
Ferrand and lived the life of a country squire, holding regular chamber music
evenings, and studying the cello. He altemated life in the Auvergne with
sojourns in the capital, and it was while in Paris in the l82Osthat he took
lessons in composition from Reicha, hoping to further his ambition to write
operas. When in his fifties, he inherited a considerable fortune and was also
elected to the Tnstitute of France in succession to Cherubini, an indication that
his compositions were respected. They were certainly heard more frequently
than they are now, when only a handful of his works for chamber
combinations are ever performed. George Onslow died in Clermont-Ferrand
in 1853, aged sixty-nine.

George Onslow did indeed compose operas, among them L’Alcalde de la

Vega, Le Colporteur and Le Duc de Guise. He also wrote four symphonies,
works for piano and strings, for piano solo or duet, and over thirty each of
string quartets and quintets. An incident in Onslow’s life relates directly to
the composition of one of these quintets. R is said that while he was out
hunting, Onsiow paused to jot down a musical theme which had just occurred
to hini and was injured in the ear by a stray shot, which left him partially deaf
for the rest of his life. He worked the theme into The Bulle t Quintet, an
example of programme music in which each section represented a different
stage in his illness and recovery, from Fever and Delirium through
Convalescence to Cure. No such drama surrounds the wind quintet by Onslow
(Op.8i no.3 in F), nor the present Nonetto, Op. 77 in C. The nonet is scored
for wind quintet w,ith violin, viola, cello and double bass, matching those by
Spohr and Lachner. The work is typical of l9th century style, including the
relatively small role for the oboe in the ensemble. Onslow himself arranged
the nonet (as Op.77bis) for a sextet of flute, clarinet, horn, bassoon, double
bass and piano another due to the lowly status of the oboe at the time! The
-

horn and clarinet parts are available in two versions, giving a choice of
transpositions. In addition, a part for clarinet in C has been prepared, for
those who wish to recreate the original sound of the ensemble. This new
edition, based on the earlier publication was set by F.H. Nex and C.M.M. Nex.
