ABSTRACT

The driving shaft is a component used in a rear wheel vehicle to transmit the power from
engine to differential. The torque that is produced from the engine and transmission must be
transferred to the rear wheels to push the vehicle forward and reverse. The drive shaft must
provide a smooth, uninterrupted flow of power to the axles. The drive shaft and differential
are used to transfer this torque. The steel that are used to make this type of shafts leads to
consumption of fuel due to its weight. An idea of reducing the weight of the components in
the automobile and to give the same efficiency as that of the original components is being
imparted. The solution for this materialistic approach is given by the composite material. Out
of all the other components in the automobile, the shaft is mainly focused in this study.
The combination of different types of materials
to form or to breed a new material with interesting characteristics and required properties for
various applications are known as composite materials... In this study, the above
characteristic of the composite materials is utilized by fabricating the mechanical drive shaft
using a composite combo of E- glass fibre and IPN resins and an experimental testing of this
shaft is done by using torsional testing machine.
Composites consist of two or more
materials or material phases that are combined to produce a material that has superior
properties to those of its individual constituents. The constituents are combined at a
macroscopic level and or not soluble in each other.
A similar shaft is modelled in ANSYS
2019 R2 and the numerical analysis is also performed in ANSYS to cross check the results of
experimental analysis. Finally the optimum range to which the E-glass fibre is to be mixed
with IPN resins is determined.
