THE FIVE SENSES

PART 02
Date:

Touch/ Feel

When we perceive things physically with our sense of touch (or experience
them emotionally) we use the verb “feel.”

I felt bad this morning, so I called in sick to work.

The sky was blue and sunny, but I felt cold in the shadow of the building.
Many people don’t like to order clothing online, as they prefer to feel the

texture of the fabric before buying.

NOTE: The past tenses of “fall” and “feel” are commonly confused!fall/ FELLfeel/
FELT

TASTE/ TASTE

When we perceive something with our sense of taste, we “taste” it.

The soup had a strong, sour taste.

When mixed with juice, you can’t even taste the medicine!
Can you taste the salt in the water?
Do you taste that taste?

NOTE: We NEVER say we “feel” a taste!

Smell/ Smell

When we perceive something with our olfactory senses, or sense of smell, we

smell it.

Cooked cabbage has a terribly strong smell.

I smelled smoke and knew we were close to the camp.
Can you smell the sea air?

Do you smell that smell?

NOTE: We NEVER say we “feel” a smell!
