Week 5 Reflections (Sept 27th to October 1st)

One of the things that really stood out to me this week was just how difficult it is for

teachers to organize field trips. Not only are there many logistical challenges like securing

enough buses for transportation and first aid kits in case anything happens, but there are also so

many bureaucratic hoops that need to be jumped through in order for the field trip to get

approval. Phil was an absolute godsend this week. He put in a lot of time and effort to ensure

everything was in order and was instrumental in making the field study possible. He has told me

that he loves doing a field study and so now I feel pressure to make a phenomenal activity for the

kids that would make all of the effort he put into it worth it.

I really am starting to notice how much I miss my kids when I have a few days off from

them. Over the weekend and on the day off this week, I found myself dreaming about my kids. If

anything, this reassures me that I am in the correct profession for myself. I truly do love all of

my kids and getting to teach every single day really is a dream come true.

Found that practicing drawing out my diagrams has been a huge help for both me and my

students. I am continuing to get to the school early so I can practice drawing and it is making the

diagrams noticeably neater when I draw them out in class.

It was nice to get the Day of Reconciliation off to catch up, but it is important to

remember why it is there in the first place. As educators, part of the responsibility lies on us to

continue the path towards healing, especially because the education system was used as a tool to

destroy Indigenous culture. It will take time to build up trust in the system again, but having

these difficult conversations about the truth of what happened is one of the ways we can

hopefully build bridges and reconcile.
