Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of hostels on personal development.

Students from Sargodha University who were living in hostels for a period of time were studied.

The primary goal of this study was to determine how important hostel life is for personal

development and to what extent hostel life influences a student's ability to grow into a good

human being and acquire skills that will help him or her live a good life in the years ahead. The

first hypothesis was that hostel life has no impact on student personal development, which was

proven incorrect because the majority of respondents believe that hostel life has a significant

impact on their personal development. The second and main hypothesis was that hostel life had

influenced their personal development, which was supported by the majority of respondents
who gave positive responses on the questionnaire. The current study employs a quantitative

research method in the form of a questionnaire to investigate the study's stated objective. The

researcher collected data from 106 respondents using a simple random sampling technique. The

study's findings are based on questions that arose during the data analysis using SPSS software.

The research found that hostel life has great impact on student personal development.

CHAPTER: 1

Introduction

Human personal is shaped by life experiences. The birth of a child provides a safe environment for

him in the family. The child is initially a member of community with limited interactions. The

interactions increase and the socialization process begins as.It helps to become an efficient member

of the individual .Society, man's way of life and personal are affected by him / her Surrounding. So

social structure plays an important role development of personal and behavior. (Amina Iftikhar*,

2015)

Students who live in the hostel face many difficulties and obstacles such as financial crises,

adjustment issues, personal disability, distress, Changes in eating and sleeping habits and many

other issues. Researches on It indicates that sympathy, altruistic behavior, and emotional stability

will be so More in the hostel students. A hostel gives environment give a chance to socialization

among students. (Amina Iftikhar*, 2015)

This research study is to determine if any relations exist between student personal development and

their role their roommates specifically in the hostels. The importance of housing covers the entire

aspects of human life. It eflects the cultural, social and economic values of a society as it is the best

physical and historical evidence of civilization in a country.

Living in hostels can produced this issue such as alcoholism, drug use, suicide, violence,

pornography and cheating academically institutions respond with policies, mutual support systems,

and role of advisory persons and things. (Rawls,Johnson, & Bartels, 2004)

Primarily, it deals with physical protection from problematic things which ordinarily may be

regarded as shelter but also provide the setting from many of the basic biological and social

processes necessary to sustain life, which permitting the healthy growth and development of the

mind (Laguas, 2011). For students living in hostels, there room partners can play important part in

their behavior towards their academic performance. People from different areas are to live under

one roof can create problems for their room partner.

The importance of housing covers the entire aspects of human. Sometimes they don’t have  good

connections but if they have, how it can be helpful for themselves So this study will be

on what how hostels hostels can effects personal of  their peers and will check in different

ways of roommates of student in hostels relationships and how their good or bad academic

performance can be happen due to their good or bad relation.

My Experience shows that interactions that take place in the same room is, either by students with

the same background or with different backgrounds, are considered roommate relationships for a

period of time. In most cases, the lifestyle, way of livings of the students involved are taken into

account. In some cases, these are new students entering higher education for the first time. Other

than secondary school experience, such students have no experience of living with other people.

Hence, they are acquitted with their roommate for the first time in life.
Another development involves older students who are familiar with relationships with roommates

hostel is considered safe place for the students who come from some distance off places. Students

are to reside there with every different and analyze different values and skills. The environment of a

hostel is considered conducive for the purpose of study.

The experience of a student especially residing private hostel or university hostel can become one

of the most fruitful, learnedful and rewarding duration of its university academic life or can become

one of the biggest nightmares if things go in negative way. Colleges and universities always try

different techniques to control, organized, and make their hostels safe for their students who are

residing in them. Different things like Roommate matching, hostel life activities, advisors in hostel,

teaching and learning communities, and other other different techniques strive to transform and

change the hostel into places for better living style, good personal and social growth (Pike,

Schroeder, & Berry, 1997

The student's resident in hostels has been a major area of to be concerned with growing

student numbers as a result of growing in the higher institutions of learning like universities and

private colleges over the years. The rise in population which has led to various problematic

conditions of student housing which range from inadequate infrastructure facilities, distance issues

to overcrowding in rooms which has indeed and researching the created with, renewed interest in

finding, best practicable approach towards the  betterment   and  efficient, conducive facilities .

Hostel living students always believe that the quality  of their classmates in their room in the hostel

matters. Many colleges and  universities are trying to admit the  highest number of quality students

they can attract increasing choosing good student are mostly a goal of an any institution .

Good students  always strive for the betterment of curriculum and, so  the thing  goes, a  much
better education through social interaction with peers inside the classroom and  outside  the

classroom.

Additionally classmates, residential peers may have an important influence and role on a student’s

formal educational environment. Hard-working roommates are always role models and are unlikely

to distract classmates from learning. Ideal students with strong learning inclinations can take the

initiative to eliminate loud or bullying behavior and provide a more favorable environment for all

roommates. The efficient and supportive student dormitories in Pakistan cannot be overestimated,

because people expect them to have a good mood and get the best academic performance through a

good student accommodation system.

In the students hostels , students not only provide physical protection, but also provide healthy

cultural, social and behavioral control and stability. The progress of some students may not be

completely related to their living conditions in the dormitory. Generally, hostels are located near to

high school or college.

The world's first hostel changed into mounted in 1912 at Altena Castle in Germany with the aid of

using Richard Sharman. The first Youth Hostels had been an exponent of the ideology of the

German Youth Movement to allow terrible town children breathe clean airs outdoors. Since then

hosteling unfold very fast. And in 1932 the primary worldwide hostel convention held in

Amsterdam geared toward uniting hostel agencies from throughout the Europe. After the primary

US hostel changed into mounted in Northfield, Massachusetts the idea of contemporary-day hostel

tradition for college kids starts to select out up and led to contemporary-day hostels of the present.
1.1 The meaning of hostel life:

When students, after passing intermediate or BA, strive for next educational level studies in

universities or colleges , away their home in different cities , then they start to live in a new place

for their academic duration , which we can refered as hostel life. In many countries in the world, the

word of the hostel is especially used for the residence of student and travelers in specific place. In

education structure, hostel is defined as a place which is part of education where students who get

admission from distant places from where they can not come daily in university , resides at a

specific place in order to pursue their formal education.

Many students come to learn in schools and colleges from distant places. It is not possible for the

students who have to come to school and college and ,after studying , go back home daily. Because

of this, they started to live in hostels. Additionally many parents and guardians suggest that their

children should live in hostels where they think they can study nicely, even their homes are not as

away which can create issue of daily coming and going.

Parents of such children think that the atmosphere and learning conditions in a hostel is favorable

for studies and they can focus much better on their studies as compared to their homes. Sometimes

parents and guardians are unable to control their naughty children at home because of their

irresponsible attitude so they prefer them to sent them to hostels. In hostels, they have to study for

themselves and do their duties themselves. In hostels, there is organised schedule for Sthe students

which they need to follow , due to which students are able to make themselves disciplined and

learn to value of the time. At some cities hostel consists hundreds of students .they make a group of
students which share rooms which each other . These students come from different ethical, social,

geographical and economical background.

1.2 The concept of Personal Development :

“ Personal can be reffered as a form of characteristic thoughts, feelings and behavior that

differentiate one individual from the other and it persists over time. It is the integration of biological

and experienced behaviours of an individual that forms responses to environmental stimuli”.

(Shyam S. Salim* and Monolisha S).

The development of personal refers to how over time organized behavior patterns form the unique

personal of each person. Many factors, including genetics, the environment, parenthood and social

variables, influence personal. Perhaps most importantly, all of these influences continue to interact

in time and shape personal.

Personal traits are unlike to each other and could be a blend of both good traits and bad traits. It’s

always a choice of individual to choose difference of traits awail by it; we require to see the will to

make changes in our life. Personal Development is a first thing towards betterment and

development of capacities and potentials of ones ,betterment of quality of life, thinking of dreams

and visions and facilitating employability. The stages include formal and informal activities and the

leaders and program managers may realize the full potential of each individual in an existing group.

Hence,” this process of improving or transforming the personal is called personal development”.

(Shyam S. Salim* and Monolisha S)

1.3 Significance of Personal Development

it's far critical to keep in mind that, eye-catching character is admiring, but this concept isn't

always without problems generic by maximum of the people. character improvement is perceived

handiest as education towards improving ones’ outlooks. that is a void assertion and it's miles ought

to to comprehend that personal improvement is a quite broader topic and it consists of how one-self

can train them to have smooth and neat social character with grace and groom. It additionally

instructs them to enhance one’s communique and interpersonal abilities . targets of existence

without those important skills may be futile to go towards fulfillment. blessings of persona

development encompass the subsequent keys;(Shyam S. Salim* and Monolisha S)

1. Self-Confidence

2. Interpersonal skills

3. Communication skills

1.3.1 Self-Confidence:

Self-confidence is an vital trait required to face success in our lives. even though many of us

nonetheless locate it tough to maintain the trait inside and this vicious cycle of missing self-

assurance may additionally cause keep us remote from our goals. confident humans appreciate the

characters in others: their chiefs, their pals, their circle of relatives and their peers. Admiring self-

belief from others may even enhance our concept in the direction of raising the self-belief in us. the

extent of self-assurance suggests in lots of methods of your behavior: the way you communicate,

the way you deal with others, the manner you clear up the issues and so forth. (Shyam S. Salim*

and Monolisha S)
1.3.2 Interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills are capabilities executed everyday which includes interplay with other humans,

both for my part and in agencies. people with strong interpersonal abilties are a success of their

professional and personal lives. Interpersonal capabilities are more concentrated on conversation,

listening, wondering and expertise frame language. it's also the skills and attributes related to the

emotional intelligence or being able to recognize and control your own and others’ emotions.

people with correct interpersonal abilities might be capable of paintings nicely in a crew or group

without any hesitation. (Shyam S. Salim* and Monolisha S)

1.3.3 Communication skills

The maximum important trait no matter different talent is being able to speak our mind and

emotions to others. communication is described as sharing the information from one place to the

alternative both vocally, written, visually or non-verbally. records transmittance must be clean and

comprehensible to make the listening group or man or woman extra interactive with other.

. (Shyam S. Salim* and Monolisha S)

The ability to communicate statistics as it should be and in reality is an vital existence orientated

talent and which must be evolved and left out. The information should be very accurate and clean.

when searching out Jobs or a advertising from our cutting-edge function, we need to illustrate and

construct and expand our verbal exchange skills. (Shyam S. Salim* and Monolisha S).

1.4 Rationale for choosing this topic:

Each phase of life is learning and I realized it when I entered a hostel. It is because experience of

learning that allows people and situations to face life on their own which prepares them to face life

in a more mature and better manner. You should learn from the hostel life what types of people are

your political friend, friend and other people if you really want to know about real life The

combination of everything is simply hostel life. Survival for life is effective Life Hostel is all It's

hard for you. T teaches you how situations can be handled. The place where you learn to remain

together immaterially and without restrictions does not appear to be conducive to education. It

teaches your team work that also facilitates your life during the exams. The chance of acquiring

hostel life should not be neglected substantially.

It helps you to deal with the worst things in life. It teaches you many lessons such as friendship,

cooperation, politics and everything else. They are many other rude stuffs like ragging, insecurity

etc. But everything depends entirely on how we take it. So that we live in the hostel teaches us the

key lesson to learn to live and customize with all people in all situations. So due to this importance

of hostel life on student personal, I have chosen this topic, it will help me to understand this kind of

accurate assumption to be test scientifically.

Significance of this Study:

This study is to have a look at importance of hostel life of male students living in hostels. And In

addition to the what kind of effective impact of hostel existence have which is helpful to increase

their personal development . because there are conducted very rare researches on this topic of hostel
importance their personal in this region. This will help out the parents or guardian of the and

students in order to understand the significance of hostel lifestyles and its effect at the character of a

student. This study also facilitates to improve the offerings inside the hostel as per the suggestions

of students.

1.6 Research objectives:

The Primary goal of the research is to explain the role of the hostel in personal development There will be

seen on what extent hostel can affect students personal when they reside in it in their education

career.

My study has following sub objectives.

● To identify the weakness of students before coming to the hostel.

● To study the impact of hostel life to develop the personal of students.

● To investigate the influence of multicultural environment

1.7 Research problem statement and questions to answer:

Those students who are bound to live with the roommates who’s are not selected by them can create

serious problems for their personal. A good and bad relationship also have great effect on the

development of personal.

So, my research will try to found the answers of following questions:

1. What is the role, hostel play in the development personal of the student who reside in it?

2. What is the role play by roommates in hostel in personal development.?

3. If hostel students have good relationships with their roommates, what effect can be seen on

their academic performance?

4. Is hostel roommates are helpful or not while studying in university?

1.8 Statement of Hypotheses

In the research study, the following null and alternate (research) hypotheses were tested:

1.8.1 Null Hypothesis:

Hostel life has not any effect on student personal development.

1.8.2. Alternate Hypotheses:

Hostel life has positive impact on student personal development.

Student personal development has improved after living in hostel.

1.9 Limitations

This study is conducted in District Sargodha. It will not be implacable to other settings. Due to

covid 19 pandemic sample size is small so the results can may vary in different settings. Moreover,

survey method was used by online website, people may choose some options according to their

mode, it can also vary results in other settings.

Chapter 2.
20
2.1 Literature Review:

First-hand experience shows that interaction which arise either from students of the same

background or of different backgrounds in the same room in the college hall of residence is

regarded as roommate relationship, for a specified period in most cases, the lifestyle, habits /

behaviors of students involved greatly differ. In some cases, this relationship involves fresh

students who are entering higher education institutions for the first time. Such students apart

from secondary school experience don’t have any experience of residing with other persons.

Thus, they will be acquitted with their roommates for the first time in life. In another

development, older students, who are familiar with roommate relationship, are involved.

(Ominojo, 2015) says that in each of the halls of residence on campus, students are grouped

together in a room, either in twos or three or four, depending on their levels of education and

sex of student. While 100 level students are allocated to a room in fours, older students in

their sophomore and penultimate classes are allocated to a room in threes. In final year, two

students are allocated to a room. In some universities, programme of study and level of

students are generally used as criterions for room allocation(ominojo, 2015). In this

arrangement, students do not determine the choice of their roommates. They are expected

to accept students allocated to them and reside with them peacefully. Also, students are

not permitted to influence room allocation. Although, students who are having challenges

such as health, social, spiritual, moral are often put into consideration in the process of

room allocation, but preferential treatment which is often the case being used in the

public sector higher education to allocation of rooms to students in few hostels

available is strictly prohibited in the private sector. Also, selling of rooms to another

21
student is strictly averse. However, it is important to note that residing with roommates is

clearly different from living with one’s family members or relatives. One’s family member

may want to tolerate and accommodate indecent behavior, bad habits etc. from somebody,

because of blood relationship but one’s roommates may never be at home with such.

Consequently residing with roommates may lead to personal mismatch among students.

In such a situation, conflict is bound to happen and in an institution where stringent

rules apply to student conduct, students who indulge in conflict are often sanctioned.

Such cases used to emerge from a little misunderstanding among students in the same

room or floor. Since most of them are adolescent, they lack maturity needed to manage

such conflicts successfully. Therefore, anyone found guilty is either asked to withdrawal

from the university or suspended or expelled(ominojo, 2015). College roommate

relationships are unique among students’ interpersonal relationships because they live

together. Roommates have frequent contact, negotiation of responsibilities, and

compromises about the living environment (e.g., noise level, sleep/waking hours, visitors,

and décor) (Erb et al., 2014).

(Ominojo, 2015) says that Students’ roommates are typically the first non-family members

and first people of equal with whom they live). Reviewing in the past, a sample of 31,500

students (50.1% female and 44.1% male) in a survey in the United States, reported

“frequent” or “occasional” conflict with roommates . The implication of occasional

conflict among students in the same room, as observed by the above authors could

impact negatively on students’ academic and social life. In another nationwide survey,

5.6% of undergraduates reported that roommate difficulties hindered their academic

performance. These respondents claimed that they received a lower grade in an

examination, received an incomplete, or dropped a course). Also, 4.0% students in the

22
survey said that alcohol use through the influence or roommates impacted negatively on

their social lives [14].an opposite, it may cause problem among them. Sharing of property

could be another area of roommate conflict among students in the hostels.

(Ominojo, 2015) says that a student might be fine if his / her roommate rummages through

his / her closet for needed items, but another roommate might see that as an invasion of

privacy. In another development, if a roommate permits his or her roommates to use his or

her properties, he or she might not be okay with him or her using them when he or she

is out of the room(Omonijo, 2015). In an institution where stringent rules apply to student

conduct in and out of campus, as obtainable in most of the private Based-Universities

in Nigeria, through a first-hand experience the chief disciplinary personnel of one of these

universities in Nigeria, roommate relationship often result in conflict, not only among

the males students but also among the female students. Hence, it is evident that many

students have faced the wrath of law for being involved in conflict, which relates to

assault, physical combat and therefore expelled or suspended, depending on the gravity

of the offence. Such cases used to emerge from a little misunderstanding roommate

and since most of them are adolescent, they lack maturity needed to manage such

conflicts successfully. Therefore, anyone found guilty is either asked to withdrawal

from the university or suspended or expelled.(ominojo, 2015)

( Kishori Kalpesh Kumar K.*, Manoj C. Shastry, , 2019)found that under-schools entering all

inclusive schools also have several problems with adapting in particular to a new learning and

teaching framework that encompasses the process from basic to optional systems that makes

it difficult for under-schools, especially the Form One, to adjust to the new situation. If it is

23
not envisaged and cured, this failure to adjust to their new environment causes them to suffer

and may make academic performance disrupt.

( Kishori Kalpesh Kumar K.*, Manoj C. Shastry, , 2019) have a good relationship between

the 13-yr undergraduate students and the process of self-adaptation for university execution,

in which more academic autonomy is developed. This problem must subsequently be

considered to ensure positive information can be provided to ensure that understudies will

most likely be ready for extraordinary study performance with hostel life.

( Kishori Kalpesh Kumar K.*, Manoj C. Shastry, , 2019)Personal is the combination of many

reliable and lasting traits. The thing a person is is. Personal. Interactions with others are the

expression of the personal of the person. The components of personal are to think and

continue, thinking is linked to feelings. The discernment and thought of the person are

therefore linked to the process of thinking. Beneficial experiences also influence and support

the individual mentalities.

( Kishori Kalpesh Kumar K.*, Manoj C. Shastry, , 2019)Personal is the attributes which in

different circumstances are constant. Personal is a person's expression. The behaviours of

people show beneficial experiences. Comportements change from person to person and the

condition includes them.

Social education enables people to transfer learning, experiences and qualities to their ability.

These individual capacities are the sole character of the individual. Thus, the qualities of

personal are determined by social exposure and the ability of the person to learn from the

outside world.

( Kishori Kalpesh Kumar K.*, Manoj C. Shastry, , 2019)While living in the hostel, students

share their own ideology with different study groups and take many new thoughts from their

colleagues in the hostel. Hostel life also affects the views and discernments of undergraduates
24
about religion. Hostel life also makes understudies more enthusiastic, the understudies that

have stayed in the hostels more independent and trustworthy than the various understudies.

The understudies in hostels learn courage and soul from various study courses, which can

help understudies to face the practical life with all their confidence.

In a larger study of 138 students from an east coast university, raters assessed students’

use of positive communication skills during hypothetical situations with roommates and

found that the skills were significantly associated with positive overall psychological

adjustment (Waldo, 1984). In a follow-up study of 127 of these participants, positive

roommate communication skills and self-reports of higher quality relationships with

roommates were each significantly associated with higher GPA and greater retention, as

indicated by their registration the following semester (Waldo, 1986). The design and data

analysis techniques in these studies did not account for interdependence that may exist

between roommates’ communication skills or their adjustment. However, the results show

that positive roommate relationships may have longer-term benefits for students’

psychological and academic functioning. Other studies provide evidence for roommate

relationships’ role as a protective factor for student mental health.

A study of 228 students showed that high levels of social support from roommates 2

weeks after moving in together weakened the association between conflict within general

friendships (also assessed 2 weeks after move-in) and psychological distress 7 weeks later,

even after adjusting for the effects of baseline psychological distress (Lepore, 1992). The

participants lived with their roommates in off-campus apartments, which may create

different expectations than traditional on-campus housing.

25
A pilot study of twenty hostel students was conducted to identify the important questions for

the semi-structured interview. A questionnaire was created, with thirty-three open-ended

questions. These questions were designed to elicit information about hostel life. The

experiences and effects of hostel life on student behaviour Notify Before beginning the

interviews, consent for audio recording was obtained. There were ten in-depth semi-

structured interviews with hostel students. With the help of illustrative examples,

interviewees were encouraged to express their experiences with hostel life. All of the

interviews lasted between 40 and 50 minutes. Each interview was videotaped and then

transcribed into written form for analysis. (Amina Iftikhar*, 2015)

In (Pragati Srivastava1, 2016) it is stated that Life at home is unlike life at the

hostel. Hostel was a place where students stay off their homes for formal education, but it

wasn't just the place of residence that the concept involved, but also the human laboratory.

Living in a hostel, you can learn different things from your prisoners and your teachers. The

early age of adult life in a commonly known 'growing up & retirement age' was assumed to

be over and to accept responsibilities in adult life, when individuals - boys or girls - reached

the legal age of maturity, their carefree days were over.

(Pragati Srivastava1, 2016) A study was carried out on various students, which showed that

they faced a lot of internal and external barriers, which prevented them from completing the

course. Their perceived ability to study science, lack of science education, or long time

between their preceding and current classes and their incapacity to plan and manage time and

budget constraints relate to these obstacles.

26
(Pragati Srivastava1, 2016) The study employed a cross-sectional research design. This

study was conducted with female hosteliers from three Lucknow city hostels, BBAU, L.U.,

and N.PG. The district of Lucknow yielded a total of 120 samples. The sample was divided

into three groups: N=40 from the BBAU campus, N=40 from the L.U. campus, and N=40

from the N.PG. campus. For the purposes of this study, two stages of random sampling were

used to collect data from various hostels.(Pragati Srivastava1, 2016). In a random sample size

N=120, taken from all campuses, so every person has the same chance of selecting. A self-

structured nutritional proforma and various standardised scales were used in the analysis of

the quality of living among hostlers by using three scales, the self-effectiveness, the stress

level and the emotional intelligence level. Using SPSS version 20, statistical analysis was

performed. (Pragati Srivastava1, 2016). Research has shown that maximum high

autoeffectiveness is found on campuses in L.U., medium self efficiency score on campus of

BBAU and maximum poor self efficiency on the campus of N.P.G. (Pragati Srivastava1,

2016)

In (Amina Iftikhar*, 2015)A qualitative survey was carried out to understand the effects of

hostels on the lives, behaviour and personal of students. In-depth interviews to gather

information on hostel life experiences have been conducted. Students have talked very

extensively about the lives of hostels, they indicated that hostels are important in our country

since they provide students with shelter, and they also decrease distance to schools. It gives

students a chance to continue the education process. It provides a perfect study environment.

(Amina Iftikhar*, 2015).For methodology ,semi-structured interviews, interview protocol

was prepared. In many qualitative research studies, half-structured interviews provide a

27
source of information. This technique has been used in face-to-face discussion for relevant

information to be collected. Open finished questions are usually used. Like other interviews,

questions are also prepared to some extent in further matters.

(Obiajulu Anthony Ugochukwu, 2015) In Previous studies show that one of the most

rewarding aspects of the college life is the of student roommate relations (McCorkle and

Mason, 2009). It can ensure students' life friendship. Students can meet in the same room and

a lobby and eventually become life friends. This powerful thing probably led many students

to assume that their room colleagues would become a friend of their life prior to entering

higher education. However, the relationship between roommates might differ from that of

friendship.. There can be a space shared for a certain period with some students without a

strong relationship, whereas friendship can represent a strong relationship.

(Obiajulu Anthony Ugochukwu, 2015) In this the theories of reciprocity are largely

associated with scholars like (Falk and Fischbacher, 2000; 1759; Ernst and Gächter, 2000).

Most of them believe that in family and intimate relationships there is reciprocity. They also

stress that this type of connection is positive by acting without expecting rapid and equivalent

rewards. (Obiajulu Anthony Ugochukwu, 2015). Reciprocity theory in social psychology

reflects another positive action in response to a positive action. However, the principle of

reciprocity is not positive. It could be observed.

In article (lubia, 2014) stated that Experience never ends, never finishes. The more we live,

the more we are learning. You give us a lesson, small or large, every day you pass. Without

28
earning, there's no point living. The best way to learn something new is to explore new life

styles. If we talk about Liberty we feel all trapped to some extent inside the four walls of our

house. We want to do things, but we can't because we live with our family. Hostel Life gives

us the freedom to fly and to follow things we couldn't do when we were at home. Both good

and bad things are included. We might get into wrong habits or take brilliant chances and

make our way to success. (lubia, 2014)

Friendship is unprecious. We make friends of a kind similar in the school and college, but

the friends we make in the workplace are somewhat different from the former. Our ultimate

family and society are the people we live with in a hostel. As we did on our parents and

siblings, we gradually start to depend on them. They become the first people with whom we

all share. Just like home, our family is the ones we meet and live with all day, our friends and

colleagues in the hostel. (lubia, 2014)

In a survey of students, Weston (1978) discovered that, in addition to living arrangements,

student-faculty interactions and the formation of new friendships in college are also important

factors in student success. In a residential setting, faculty contact has been limited.

According to (Astin ,1977), Residence Hall influence, is realized primarily in the freshman

year, with subsequent exposure having less or no influence. Simply by living on campus, you

will have more opportunities to participate in campus life. Even so, living in a residence hall

does not guarantee a worthwhile or enjoyable experience.

(Moores &Klas, 1989) says that For both students and collegiate institutions, student attrition

refers to a variety of losses. When students do not pursue their degrees to completion, they

waste time and money. The amount of time and energy spent by the institution and its

employees can also be significant. Students who are denied admission due to a lack of space
29
and resources miss out on opportunities. The ability of a departing student to develop his or

her potential within the collegiate environment is limited, and not completing a significant

life goal can have a significant impact on a student's self-esteem.

for students to have a complete educational experience (Blimling, 1993). To ensure student

success, The environment of residence halls must be influenced by the residence hall

experience. designed to reinforce classroom learning and increase students' commitment to

learning

university (Schroeder, 1994).

Hostel life differs greatly from the way we live in our homes. It gives a brand new mould to

our lives and personalities. We learn to fit into a new environment and are exposed to many

unknown situations. There is never a good or bad experience. We are growing with every day

we live. Life at the hostel adds a big part of our life's growth. It's not just a growth form but in

many ways it's beneficial. Emotional, mental, emotional and physical development. We

grow. We learn how to deal with new circumstances, tough times, to solve our own

difficulties, to protect ourselves, to manage one' s life, to live alone. (lubia, 2014)

We are all sheltered, with our families, but as long as we go out and live with other people,

we have to go out and make friends, even if introverted. If we don't communicate with others,

living in a hostel is difficult. We discover by ourselves that we can no longer be the pampered

prince that we are in and do our own things, share our stuff with others, live a life where we

30
are our own protectors and carers. Going out helps us to learn to interact with other people

and make new friends because nobody can live alone. (lubia, 2014)

Who needs novelty in life? We're all doing that. Stepping out of your house and living in a

hostel for a completely different time is one of the best ways to bring about the necessity of

every human life, novelty. The everyday lifestyle is monotonous, planned, organised and

predictable, so long as you go to an inn. Life changes absolutely; from the end of dependence

to old friends, to old lifestyles and living with families, everything is new. (lubia, 2014)

We are free to explore many arenas in a new place and a new environment among new

persons, in a new life and in a hostel. They are both good and bad things, but all of them all

mean that a host is opening new doors. We meet new people here and thus participate in new

stuff. In our hostels there are hundreds of new and versatile activities. (lubia, 2014)

What not found in existing literature therefore I’ll do:

Existing literature is almost have Same culture students in a room where they live in

hostel, they do not have such cultural ethnicity what a Pakistani Culture system and our

values and moral have. My research is going to found these dynamics cultural students

like from Baluchistan, Azad Kashmir and KPK, these students have mighty different

cultures and when they get to get there in a room. There might be an interesting relation

will create among roommates which will affect their personal lifestyle and academic

performance as well.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

The chapter on research methodology provides us with data to assess the validity of our work.

This part answers the two main questions: firstly, how the research data were collected and

secondly how the data were analysed and the rules and rules followed in that particular

research.

The data were gathered by online survey due to COVID-19. Good methodology is essential

for empirical checking and establishing a knowledge chain.

(Bem, Daryl J. 2008) explain the five key points of a good methodology.

1. Because the reader wants to know how to obtain information used in the research.

2. The methodology used in the field of study is reliable with or is accepted by the reader.

3. The method of research must be appropriate to the study's goals.

4. Discussing the problems anticipated should be the method.

5. The most important thing is to always provide adequate information so that others can use

or duplicate the study.

32
This chapter is meant to describe the tools and methods to carry out the study. The scientific

approach is a method for clearing rules and procedures based on all the research and

evaluating knowledge claims.

There are several approaches and different designs for studying various questions:

3.1 Research Design

This study was based on the descriptive research method. This type of research was found

(Polit & Hungler 1999) to define the descriptive type and defines what exists, and can assist

in revealing new facts and significances. This method defines social realities or gives the

scientist facts about the social world and data on different social facts.

The purpose of descriptive investigation is to observe the feature of the situation, to describe

it and to document it as normal.

It requires many data, which are usually analysed using statistical methods. This includes the

collection and/or description of data for individuals, groups and circumstances. Included

questionnaires, interviews and observations are an instrument that is used to reach data in the

descriptive research type.

3.2 Quantitative Research

Quantitatively, the data collected through samples, questionnaires or survey are emphasised

on the objectives, measurements and numerical analysis. (EarlR, Babbie, 2010)

Quantitative research stresses the collection and simplification of numerical data across

different groups of people. The main objective of quantitative research is to solve the

relationship between variables one (independent) and one (dependent) of the population.

Maintaining numbers, logic, and objectives, quantitative research concentrates on logic,

33
numbers, static information and the entire, convergent reasoning and not the different

thinking.

3.3 Population

“The whole form which the sample is chosen is called population or universe”.

In the statistical universe or population, the qualities, the attributes or the behavior of a

detained individual may be such as, for example, the city or city block, household, dice or

coin, the structure of the dwelling, day output of a factory and the opinion of the whole nation

(Goode and Hatt, 2012).

Students who are living or lived in hostels under certain periods of time and studying in

Universty of Sargodha were our population for this study.

3.4 Sample

According to (Narain, 2007) 'We collect data on a few cases for sampling in social research

as well as in routine life and aim to judge a far larger amount of cases. In social research the

physical constraints and cost factors usually play a key role. Therefore, despite studying the

whole world, it is cheaper and more well organised to build on sample studies.

3.5 Sample Size

The question as to how large the sample size of the research is often asked. The answer is

based on several features such as population size and a representative sample size would be

chosen. A large sample size is not necessary to be a true representative. The sample of my

study is 106 students of University of Sargodha who reside in hostels for checking their

personal development.

34
3.6 Sample Technique

Sampling can be well defined as assessing something in a small section and then makes an

overview of the whole thing. (Hatt and Goode, 2012)

In the specific study we collected the data from 106 hostel residents who live in certain

period of time was collected through questionnaire using survey method.

3.7 Simple Random Sampling

The simple random sampling sample is the sampling frame, in which the researcher shapes

the sampling frame and the investigator uses pure random procedure to select cases (Neuman,

2006).

For the process of this research, we selected University of Sargodha. We sent our

questionnaire to different students of university and asked them to fill the online generated

survey through google forms.

3.8 Tools of Data Collection

3.8.1 Questionnaire

The questions and other types of items are included in the questionnaire to request

information that is relevant for analysis. Questionnaires are primarily used in investigation

but also in experiments, field research and other observation methods. (Babbie, 2013)

Since this was quantitative research, a questionnaire is used to collect data. The questionnaire

is based on questions which are closed ended.

35
3.8.2 Questionnaire Pre testing

Preliminary testing occurs, which measures subjects as a dependent variable (Babbie, 2005).

The researcher tested the questionnaire for the study with seven respondents in advance. The

pre-testing objective was to assess the questionnaire's validity, reliability, and operability.

These respondents and their responses were not part of the actual process of the study and

used for testing purposes only. The researcher requested any suggestions and/or corrections

to the respondents in order to ensure the instrument was improved and valid.

On the suggestion of the respondents, the researcher revised the survey questionnaire. In

order to ensure intellectual capacity, the researcher excluded irrelevant questions and changed

vague or difficult terminology into simple ones.

3.9 Dealing with Data

3.9.1 Coding Data

A researcher needs to put quantitative data in a different form before examining to test

hypothesis.

Data coding means that raw materials are systemically reorganised in a computer-readable

format (Neuman, 2006).

3.9.2 Entering Data

The entry of data is also an important step to take carefully. The SPSS data have been
entered.

36
3.9.3 Data Analysis

Quantitative data were analysed using various methods of statistics, such as statistical

descriptions and univariate analysis. The simplest way to analyse data is through Univariate.

It has been used in uniform percentages and frequencies.

3.9.4 Use of SPSS

This revolutionary analysis system is known as the SPSS, which means that the volume of

social science data collected by various technology must be analysed quickly.

The software for SPSS was first used at the University of Stanford. SPSS is one of the most

commonly used social science software packages. It was very important to facilitate research

data using individual and discreet analytical units (Wellman, 1998).

Furthermore, SPSS software has made it clear that analytical targets have been made more

difficult by improving access, usability and the use and use of quantitative research methods

in decision making. For data analysis, SPSS version 15 was used.

3.10 Statistical Analysis

3.10.1 Frequency Distribution

37
The coded and prepared data is already ready for analysis. The data are now ready. The first

task is to construct the frequency distribution, to check the pattern of answers for each of the

independent variables and dependent variables. In each variable category, the frequency

distribution of the single variable is the frequency of observation.

The research simply lists the categories of each variable for a frequency distribution and

includes the number of observations. The standard form of the univariate frequency

distribution is provided.

F= n / T * 100%

Where:
N = Number of respondents
T = Total number of respondents.

3.10.2 Percentage

In the study, percentages of various data categories have been used to make the data

comparable.

The following formula has been used for finding percentage.

Percentage = F/N multiply

by 100

ƒ = Absolute
Frequency
N = Total Number

3.10.3 MEAN
38
Mean of these is an average number: the central value of a set of numbers is calculated. It is

the average collection of values in simple words. In statistics, the average is, separate from

mode and medium, one of measures of a central trend. But the core value of these data or

observations is defined by all three metrics (mean, medial, mode).

Mean = (Sum of all the observations/Total number of observations)

3.10.4 Standard Deviation

Standard differences are useful measurements for spreading normally. Data is symmetrically

distributed without skew in normal distributions. The majority of values cluster around a

central area, with values sticking out from the center. The standard difference tells you how

your data are spread out on average from the distribution center. Numerous scientific data,

including heights, standardized test results, or employment satisfaction ratings, follow normal

distributions. We can compare their distributions with statistic tests, if you have the standard

variations of different samples, to determine the larger populations from whence they

originated.

The population standard deviation formula looks like this:

Formula Explanation

● σ = population standard deviation

● ∑ = sum of…
● X = each value
● μ = population mean
● N = number of values in the
population
