Engineering Consultation Report
Introduction:
This report is prepared in accordance to company provided data of bearings and calculation are based on the
data by customer on-site or through emails. All suggestion are in good faith of improving the equipment
efficiencies, life and maintenance friendliness without changing anything related to its output.
Case in discussion:
Problem statement:
It is requested to provide exact formula/process for determination of tape roller bearing preload/axial
clearance in this case. (Planning Best way Cement Chakwal)
Comments:
Proper clearance/preload setting of TRB (Tapered roller bearing) is required to ensure safe
function of gear set and bearing.
As due to design of the TRB has no manufactured clearance of the bearing. Clearance or preload
can be set by user during mouting and maintenance.
Clearance means (in general) leaving gap inside the bearing and preload means creating
interference inside the bearing, either by selecting shaft and housing tolerance.
But for TRB this is achieved by setting adjacent parts of bearing, such as locking nut or end
covers.

Normally Maintenance department wonders that what should be the set clearance/preload of
TRB sets in gear boxes, and how to achieve that.
First of all, the set value of clearance and preload for TRB set will always come from
manufacturer.
In case of no information from manufacturer is available, then we normally suggest slight
clearance in the set, for lubrication purpose of the bearing and to avoid preload at high speed.
We as general rule, unless advised by manufacturer, do not go for preload arrangement.
Here we can saggregate, the mounting of TRB in (a) Mounted in a Pair (b) Mounted at a distance
on same shaft.
In your case the situation is case “b” where the bearing are mounted in about 84.75 mm.
Those bearings are not paired but mounted on the same shaft in “O” or “Back to Back”
arrangement.
In this case, we need to (a) measure the clearance and also, (b) calculate the expected change
of clearance during operation.
Assemble the gear box, and put it on an even surface in the work shop, in a way so that pinion
shaft can be lifted vertically.
Now attach
Now attached two dial gauges separated at 180 deg to each other and lift the shaft and read the
gauge.
In this way you can set your desired clearance for the application.
