Bacayan is a small barangay which it is situated 12 kilometers north
of Cebu City. Barangay Bacayan has several sitio within it. It is originally named Sitio Talamban where it was known for its bamboo and it was a place for cockfighting activities. The name of the barangay was taken from the native word “Tigbakayan” which means an open place where cockfights were usually held. Some old folks say the name derived from the word “bagacay” which means a place where bamboo trees abound. Bacayan represented as the official name of the barangay as it is closer to the descriptions of the place passed on from one generation to another. The story of how it was named still lives on up to this day in almost all of the residents in the barangay. It originates from two different words and meaning but it was still named after where it was known then to be.
