Lesson Plan
for
2nd or 3rd Grade

Dear Educator,

Thank you for selecting this lesson to raise awareness and teach love and anti-racism.

The purpose of the lesson is to bring awareness to implicit biases that exist within
students. When teaching the lesson, please use your professional discretion and do not
share the student self-assessment with other students or adults. Your students will not
be aware of the racism that has been taught to them and will need to be taught that no
matter the color of one’s skin color, background, culture or differences, everyone is
special and should be loved. It is important to teach love, bring awareness of the implicit
biases that exist so we can teach against racism. Without knowledge of different types
of bias and racism, we cannot begin to make a positive difference.
Use the lesson to teach love by learning what your students are thinking and how they
would react. The entire lesson will transition from whole group to small group discussion
and reflection.
Students should be allowed to discuss with their peers about the various topics
provided. At the end of the week, students will be required to work together with
different peers to create a project to present.
Please review and prepare all lessons prior to holding the discussions.
Sincerely,

Dr. Shirley Auguste

Lesson Plan
For
2nd or 3rd Grade
Title: Everyone is Beautiful Timeframe: 1 or 2 Day

Explanation: This lesson will allow students to think critically about how people are
different and unique. By the end of the lesson, they will understand uniqueness is
beautiful, and they should never ridicule or be afraid of someone who looks different.

Objective: Students will be able to understand the importance of respecting people for
their different cultures and background by identifying how people are created uniquely
and be able to explain ways the differences can help society to be a kinder place.

Pre-teaching directions:
Review all of the lessons prior to starting. The lessons build upon each other and must
be done in the sequence provided.

(In person lesson) Have five (5) large chart papers around the room, pencils, markers,
and a copy of the attachment to distribute to the students. Get a bouquet of flowers (the
bouquet can be any arrangement or colors) for day 1. Be sure to have all of the
materials in the lesson for in person or online.

(Online) – Create chat rooms, inform the students or (parents) in advance to have
pencil, crayons, and paper to write their responses and access to the attachment. Get a
bouquet of flowers (the bouquet can be any arrangement or colors). Be sure to have all
of the materials in the lesson for in person or online.

Teacher will need to prepare to group the students in small groups of 3, 4 or 5. The
student groups should constantly be switched. The students should not work with the
same student or a best friend. The purpose of the pregrouping is to ensure that the
students are working with a student they would not necessarily work with. Have a
different group for each group activity.

Objective: Students will be able to understand the importance of respecting people for
their different cultures and background by identifying how people are created uniquely
and be able to explain ways the differences can help society to be a kinder place.

Opening: Teacher will greet the students, set the norms by letting them know that they
are expected to act respectfully towards each other when they begin the new
assignment. It is important for everyone to respect each other’s responses and NOT get
upset when anyone shares or asks a question. Any comments made should be kind and
for the good of the group.

Inform the students they will be taking a pre-assessment and must attempt to do their
best. Allow 20 minutes.

Teacher states – We are going to discuss a couple of scenarios and it is ok to be honest

because we are going to learn how to do things differently. We are going to discuss
how to be accept others despite their differences.

Teacher will not react to any of the student responses or guide them in how to respond
to any of the questions. As the students are responding, take note of the responses. Do
not share student responses with the class or any adult. Use the Activity Form -
Scenarios

Online – Have the students send you their responses via private chat.

After all of the questions have been answered and the students have written their
responses, collect all of the answer sheets and keep as record for your personal data.
Do not share the response with the class or anyone. Review the student response and
utilize it to teach the students how to be respectful of others despite their culture, race,
or any difference.

“Today, we are going to learn about anti-racism. Does anyone know what anti-racism
means?” Teacher will allow students to provide a response without agreeing or
disagreeing.

Teacher will write responses on one of the large chart papers hanging in the classroom.
Online – The teacher will make note of all of the responses to share during the week)

Teacher will state – “Thank you for sharing.”

Teacher will state – “I am going to ask another question and want you to shout out your
answer when you have one: What does a kind world look like?”

Teacher will allow as many students to answer both (online and in person) without
agreeing or disagreeing.

Teacher will write the responses on another large chart paper that is hanging in the
classroom.

(Online – The teacher will make note of all of the responses to share during the week)

Teacher will state – “Thank you for sharing. We are going to find out what the answer is
in just a few minutes.” “Now, we are going to read the objective for today.” Teacher will
pick three (3) different students to read the objectives. (Yes, each student will read the
objective once. This way the class will hear the objective three times.) Teacher will have
the objective displayed for the students to read:

Activity form

“Our objective for today is to understand the importance of respecting people for their
different cultures and backgrounds by identifying how people are created uniquely and
be able to explain ways the differences can help society be a kinder place.”

Teacher will ask two students (that did not read) to state what they think the objective
means? Once the students share the teacher will thank the students and elaborate on
the meaning.

Motivation – Teacher will direct the students to write their responses on the lines to
question 1. Read the question “1. Looking at the flower bouquet – What do you see? Do
you like it? Why or Why not?” and show the bouquet of flowers (online and in person) –
give the students approximately 3 minutes to write their responses. If more time is
needed, give them a total of 5 minutes.

Share out – Have about 5 different students share what they wrote – do not correct or
have them change their responses.

(3 minutes) Teacher will tell the students they will have 3 minutes to go to 2 different
people to share what they wrote and for them to share with their buddies if they agree or
disagree and why. Allow the students 3 minutes to go around and share.

(Online – put the students in groups of 4 and tell them that everyone has to share)

After 2 minutes – announce that they have 1-minute remaining and they should be
getting to the last person to share.

Time – Call time and have everyone return to their seats

Teacher will create a chart to show - Yes – I like it No – I don’t like it It was ok
The teacher will record student responses.

Teacher Explanation – Compliment the students on doing a nice job sharing their ideas
about the definition of anti-racism and what they envisioned as a kinder world. Most of
all, for sharing with each other their opinions about the flower. Explain they will learn
about anti-racism and how to make the world a little bit kinder now and as they grow up.
Teacher will record everyone’s responses.

Review the data of Yes – I like it No – I don’t like it It was ok

Teacher will ask “Why did I have to give 3 different options?” - Allow students to
express different responses such as “everybody doesn’t like the same thing,” “you
wanted to give us choices,” etc.

Teacher will explain – I gave 3 choices because no one is the same and it is not always
likely that everyone is going to like the same thing. Look around the room, do we all look

the same? No, we do not. Is anyone better than another? No, we are not. We are all
created differently and will do things differently.

Brief discussion of preposition - Teacher will first explain that the first part of the word is
a preposition and definitions for the preposition.

Anti-racism comes from putting together “anti” and “racism” together. Who can tell me
what does “anti” stand for?

Teacher will explain that “anti is a preposition meaning against. Whenever you put anti
in front of a word it is going to change the meaning of the word to be the opposite.” In
this case – Racism means to be prejudice against someone because of the way they
look, talk, their family background, or something about them that is different from you (it
is having a prejudice or bias). (According to Oxford Language dictionary – Racism is prejudice,
discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a
particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.)

Teacher say - So, when you put “anti” in front of “racism” it changes the word to “anti-
racism” which now means, being against racism. These next couple of days, we are
going to work on making sure we are not acting in a racist or mean way towards
anyone. We are going to learn more on why being racist against anyone for any reason
is wrong. To create a world where people are kind and caring, it requires that we
respect each other for who we are and everything about us.

Teacher will inform the students that they are going to reflect on a time when someone
was mean to them and how it made them feel? What would they have told the person if
they could about what the person did or said to them?

Timed Self-Reflection - Use Form 3. Allow students 7 minutes to write their reflection.
Announce when the students have 5 minutes and 2 minutes.

Upon completion of time, have 3 students share what they wrote.

Teachable moment -Teacher will inform the students – As you get older, you will meet
all kinds of people and they will be different in many ways. Some will look different, talk
differently, and may even dressed differently. Their differences must be respected, just
like you and your differences must be respected. The world will only become a nicer
place when we appreciate and respect people who are different. Always remember, no
one is better than anyone. Everyone has their own great qualities. You may not
understand, agree, or even like it, and that is really ok. But you must respect it. You will
have people that try to get you to be mean to someone because they look different or
are from somewhere that you have no idea of where it is. And, you must never agree to
mistreat someone, no matter what or who it is that is trying to get you to be mean. Now,
I want you to close your eyes for a minute and imagine. I want you to imagine a world

where everyone is always nice to each other. No one is ever rude or mean to anyone
that is different. You or your friends were always nice to everyone and everyone was
nice to you. How would you feel? Give them about 30 secs to a minute to just be silent
and daydream.

Teacher States – Let’s share some ways that we can be nice to people who are
different than us and what we can do.

Group Activity – Put the kids in groups of 4. Teacher will state – you are going to
illustrate, write a song, skit or story of a scenario of how to be nice to someone who is
different than you. At the end, you will present to the class. Provide the students 10
minutes for the activity

Time - Announce when the students have 5 minutes and 2 minutes.

Sharing – Have all of the groups share

Review/Closure – Form 2 – Allow students 7 minutes to write they have learned

and to turn it in to you. They must have written 3 things with an explanation.

A grade will be given for the reflection. See the rubric below.

Rubric

3 Detail response with explanation – Excellent

2 Partial response with some explanation – Fair
1 Response and minimal writing – Needs Improvement
