3. Equipment needed: Box of crayons, colored pencils, or markers, an adult coloring

book or sheet

3. Activity Description –

Participants are to complete an adult color by number picture using their preferred color
methods. Color by number consists of coloring a picture that divides the artwork into
distinct spaces, the intended color of each indicated by a number and referenced from a
key. For example, the key could have a blue box next to the number 1, this would tell the
participant to color all spaces with a 1 in blue.

Participants are instructed to:

1. Put on a relaxing music station while coloring

2. Gather all coloring materials and have them close by to their pictures.
3. Match all of the colors with the corresponding number on the key
4. Starting with 1 color all spaces the color that corresponds with 1
5. Repeat step 4 until all the picture is colored
6. Ask participants how they are feeling and if that activity relaxed them in any
sense.
7. Have participants show their pictures and express if color provided them a
positive or negative experience.

4. Primary social interaction pattern(s) (activity analysis) –

This activity was chosen because coloring for adults can have many health benefits for
the mind and body. Coloring has the ability to have a relaxing effect of the mind and
body, inducing the same state as meditating by reducing possible stressful or
overwhelming thoughts one might be experiencing. This color activity generates
mindfulness and quietness, which allows your mind to get some rest. The number aspect
of this activity also works to improve ones ability to focus, which opens and expands
your frontal lobe. I chose to complete the activity analysis form for this activity instead of
the TAAAM because it provides a scale rating system on different aspects of the activity
and what it provides for the participant. It doesn’t have to be a yes or no answer on the
skills needs or benefits but it can be a range. The social aspects can be aggregate because
it can be directed by a person toward an object in the presence of others or
extraindividual because it can be an action directed toward an object, not in the presence
of others.

5. Adaptation: An incomplete C6 Spinal Cord Injury is one that affects the lower end of
the cord near the base of the neck. This injury can result in loss of sensation or
function of everything in the body from the top of the ribcage on down, including all
four extremities. However since it is an incomplete injury, the individual did not lose
all function. Therefore, some sensation, even if it's faint, and movement is possible.
An adaption for this activity could be to move this color by numbers activity to an
online coloring activity. There are color by number apps that allow you to simply
touch the color you wish to use and then tap the numbered areas. This movement of
just touching a screen is less taxing than the fine motor skills needed to actually color
a picture by hand. Also, another adaption could be to move the picture from a table to
a canvas propped up so that the participant does not have to look down to color, but
rather keep their neck in an upright position while coloring.

6. Participant: 21-year-old man with an incomplete C 6 Spinal Cord Injury
