Reynolds: Is There Anybody Out There?
It’s March 21 and we stand facing
the legislative building. Over 1500
students from around the state sur-
round us and chant “S-O-S. Save
our schools.”
But where are the J-students and
faculty? The university budget is
about to be cut by millions of dol-
lars, whole schools and universities
are proposed to be shut down and
yet the Reynolds School of Journal-
ism is nowhere to be found. And
then like God himself, Paul Mitch-
ell shows up.
We felt redeemed. For a while . . .
Liquor and Ledes tweeted the
March 21 rally because Liquor and
Daddy Dean:Rolling Stone
“Papa was a rolling stone.
Wherever he laid his hat was his
home.
(And when he died) All he left us
was alone.”
Daddy Dean wrote a farewell
email to the J-School in Adminis-
trator Speak. We feel it is our duty
to translate the text into English.
I took the position at LSU be-
cause I thought it was time to go to
a slightly different kind of institu-
tion.
The University of Nevada is a
sinking ship and I want no part of
it.
LSU emphasizes the intersection
of media and politics, an area of
Ledes knows what it means to be
journalists.
We did not sit idly by in class
while one of the biggest rallies in
the history of modern Nevada de-
scended on the capitol.
We covered by Twitter, by video,
by photograph and by pen and pa-
per. And we all sang “Home Means
Nevada” with vigor.
The argument has been made by
an LOA (a professional who comes
to teach) that being in class is as
important as activism. We’re argu-
ing for the journalism school (stu-
dents and faculty) to come together
and cover the rally, the cuts and the
great interest to me.
The “eviscerate higher ed” thing
rubbed me the wrong way. Five
percent paycut? No way, San Jose.
The Reynolds School is in great
shape--and is about to be in even
better shape when the “new” build-
ing opens in January.
The J-School is going through
hard times. The faculty is just
riding an apathetic wave and is
partially demoralized and I’m too
old to deal with all this Rah-Rah-
Rah stuff.

potential disaster.
We believe that sitting in a class
room and learning about journal-
ism pales in comparison to going
out there and getting the story.
We’re arguing that the journalism
school should be producing jour-
nalism, not just learning about it.
A real crisis has befallen the uni-
versity and the entire higher educa-
tion system in Nevada. Yet no real
effort has been made to unite the
skills and manpower of the jour-
nalism school to do good for the
university as a whole.
Who we want to be our
New Daddy:
Andy Rooney: He can stick with
something for more than 60 min-
utes.
Barbara Walters: She’s 81 and still a
fox.
Jake Highton: Wouldn’t that just be
ironic?
Anderson Cooper: Every member
of Liquor and Ledes has a crush on
him.
Zombie William Randolph Hearst:
Even if his only involvement is
saying “Brains!” it would still be an
improvement.
Bruce Campbell: After all these cuts,
we’re going to need an Army of
Darkness.
LeVar Burton: Because he has a
reason for talking to us like we’re
children. (Scripps Dinner, anyone?)
 Born from Inbreeding: RSJ’s Family Values
In Nevada, we like to think that
we’re above the inbreeding tenden-
cies of our southern cousins, their
brains corrupted by moonshine and
humidity. But then we remember
we have UNLV.
And then we look to the J-
School.
The Reynolds School of Journal-
ism has a problem . . . with incest.
All of the instructors (LOAs,) sans
three, graduated at some point
from the j-school. With all of the
laws against incest in this country,
we’re stumped as to how the ad-
ministration avoids arrest.
Let us illustrate: 9 out of the 12 Lots of Alumni
LOAs (Lots of Alumni) at RSJ are Jackie Shelton -- BA
graduates or graduating from the Chris Orr -- BA
same school they teach at. Alison Gaulden -- BA
For a school which claims to only Brian Duggan -- BA
hire the best and brightest, it seems David Calvert -- BA
strange that the best and brightest Ryan Jerz -- MA
graduate from RSJ. Ego much? Megan Myers -- MA

We’ll Drink to That

(We raise our glasses high in salutations)
• Jake Highton Resolution: Is this the best thing the
ASUN Senate has ever done . . . ever? Answer: Yes.
• Jonathan Moore for accomplishing something: the
Jake resolution, the textbook exhange program, the
20k in scholarships. We’re not sure about the irony
of taking 20k from bookstore profits for scholar-
ships whilst trying to destroy them with the ex-
change. Guess that makes you a real politician.
• Allison Gaulden, our first Twitter follower. (Insert
Cody Liska’s abortion joke here.)
• Jake Highton. Best professor of all time. He’s so
journalism, he’d correct God’s grammar.
• To Deidre Pike, Paul Mitchell, Duggan/Calvert
(DugCal) for cancelling classes so students could
go to the rally.
• An extra drink to Deidre Pike for forcing her fledg-
ling journalistos to attend the rally. Politcal activ-
ism FTW!
• PRSSA for picking quality leaders this election
cycle.
• The IMC Team for giving up spring break for
JCPenney. The students are working harder than
the child slaves in Maylasia’s JCPenney sweat shops.
• Our first edition: Why? Because you may have
thought of this, but we made it happen.
• Our first editor: he’s so cool, he’s not even a J-stu-
dent.
Driven to Drink
(We drink in hopes of forgetting)
• PR students and Todd Felts for allowing them-
selves to be hoodwinked by the US Military.
• The “it’s not our necks yet” attitude of the J-School.
• Pitiful student involvement. No one (read: Whit-
ney Ginsburg) ran for the open senate seat. Few
showed up at the rally. We weren’t surprised: chil-
dren take after their Daddy.
• The complete and total lack of print leadership.
What happened to the SPJ?
• Teachers made their students go to J-Week but not
the Mar. 21 rally. (So long as it makes our school
look good, right guys?)
• Why were so many graduating seniors not invited
or worse, forgotten, at the most important, and
(free) alcohol-laden event of the year?
• The Nevada Sagebrush for not covering the Jake
Highton Resolution.
