Bacterial Growth Patterns

Purpose:
To observe bacterial growth patterns and practice microbiology lab techniche.

Hypothesis:
Quadrant four will produce the most bacteria (door knob) out of all the other quadrants.

Materials:

● Agar plate
● Sharpie
● Two Q-tips
● Tape

Procedure:

1. Gather materials.
2. Set up agar plate: divide into four quadrants, label, write names on lid.
3. Determine and collect from sample areas (consider time).
4. Transfer to plate.
5. Tape plate closed for incubation.

Locations:

Quadrant one: Control

Quadrant two: Eye Wash station
Quadrant three: Ms. Brown’s computer
Quadrant four: Door knob
Data:

Conclusion:

The locations tested for bacteria growth consisted of the eyewash station, Ms. Browns computer,
and a door knob. The hypothesis stated that quadrant four (the door knob) would have the most
bacterial growth. This hypothesis was incorrect. Quadrant four had close to no bacterial growth.
The quadrant with the most bacterial growth was quadrant two ( the eyewash station). Quadrant
three (Ms. Brown’s computer) had almost as much bacterial growth as quadrant two, but did not
reach the same level of bacteria. Quadrant number one was the control, and had no bacterial
growth. An improvement that could be made in the experiment would be to use a timer in order
to make time an exact and a constant variable in the experiment. For further experimentation, the
quadrants would test different locations. Future experimentation attempts would also limit
contamination by using sterile materials such as Q-tips.
