PICTURE 1

For the picture 1 it shows the phenomena that we call as a fish kill. The survival of the
aquatic life depends on a sufficient level of oxygen dissolved in water. From the picture 1 it shows
that the water has a low dissolved oxygen (DO). This might happen because of the thermal pollution.
Thermal pollution is the degradation of water quality by any process that changes ambient water
temperature. The increase of the water temperature in ocean is due to the discharge of heated
water from industrial process. The increases in ambient water temperature will occur in streams
where shading vegetation along the banks is removed or where the sediments have made the water
more turbid. Both of these effects allow more energy from sun to absorbed by the water and
increase it temperature.

PICTURE 2

For the picture 2 it can be classified as the point sources pollution. From the picture 2 it
shows that the water colour is darker. The anaerobic conditions at bottom will produce hydrogen
sulfide and methane. The scum formation will happen at the surface and the dissolved oxygen (DO)
will at the minimum level. The DO concentration is at the minimum level because of the anaerobic
decomposition. Then the to aquatic life will die or migrate because of increases of ammonia
nitrogen.

PICTURE 3

For the picture 3 it can be classified as the Eutrophication. When large amount of C, N and P
are introduced the will promoted uncontrolled growth of algae in epilimnion. When the algae die,
they drop to the bottom (hypolimnion) and become the source of carbon for decomposing this
material, dissolved oxygen (DO) may be depleted enough to cause hypolimnion to become
anaerobic. When more algae die, so more DO will be used the metalimnion may be the anaerobic.
Aerobic biological activity would be concentrated only in the upper few feet of the lake. When the
higher aerobic biological activity it will decrease the light penetration that cause limitation that
cause limitation in photosynthetic algal activity in the surface layer. The amount of DO will be
contributed by the algal activity reduces and eventually epilimnion also becomes anaerobic.
