The pH scale is used to tell us how acidic or alkaline a substance is. Indicators are different colours in different
pHs. Universal indicator has a different colour for each of the 14 pH values. It is red in a substance with a pH of
1 but green in a substance with a pH of 7 and purple in a substance with a pH of 14.

Aim
Use an indicator to decide the pH values of some acids and alkalis substances.

Questions

1. Classify each substance as strong or weak acid or alkali, or neutral.

2. Would you consider the method you used accurate enough to decide the real pH value for the solutions?
Explain your answer.

3. How could you find out a more accurate pH for a solution?

4. Compare and contrast the common substances with the substances found in lab according to their
acidity or alkalinity, give a reasonable explanation for their differences in pH.

5. State conclusions for this lab practice. Be sure of adding its connection to the digestive system topic and
propose other hypothesis that can be evaluated or tested.
