Literary Translation as an Aspect of Intercultural Communication

The article under review is about the process of translators’ training in the
context of intercultural communication. The author draws our attention to the fact
that today we live in the globalizing world which is the reason of a broad cultural
exchange. Since the translator is an intermediary between two different cultures, it is
necessary to carefully approach the process of training. The author stresses that the
training of translators is an urgent problem, especially in the field of the translation of
literary texts.

While teaching literary translation, it is important to understand that translation


should take into account both linguistic and extralinguistic factors; translation
depends entirely on the competence of the translator; the training itself should be
based on a specially developed model that will cover all aspects of the competence of
the translator and the translation process itself.

The article describes three stages of the model for literary translation:
preparatory, pretranslatory analysis and interpretation of text, implementation of the
translation, editing.

Preparatory stage includes forming the main competences of translator and


gaining theoretical knowledge to be able to translate. Pretranslatory analysis and
interpretation stage is about abilities to dwell on the ST. Implementation of the
translation is about performing translation using various methods, strategies,
transformations and techniques. The last stage is editing where the translator should
remove any kind of errors that was made during the previous stage.

The article enumerates different types of translation exercises that can be


divided into language, operational and communicative. They are aimed at a solution
of specific translation problems, and their implementation will help to get an
adequate translation.

At the end of the article the importance of knowing not only the source
language, but also the native, target language is stressed.
