· Topic of research: " The Replacement of a Ward Léonard group by an electronic speed
controller: Case of the Ward Léonard Group operating at the ACP"

· Summary of the research:

The purpose of this research was the replacing of the Ward Léonard group which
operates at the Panda Central Workshop (ACP in acronym) by an electronic speed
controller. This workshop is an entity of Gecamines which is responsible for
manufacturing the parts necessary for the proper functioning of its factories.

The problem in this research was that the Ward Leonard group that operated at Panda
Central Workshops was run down, and its obsolescence was causing repetitive
breakdowns, regular maintenance, and slowdowns in production. Since this device is
used for speed variation of DC motors, my job was to find the best solution which can
replace the Ward Leonard group and performing the same role. In order to achieve this
goal, a deep study of the Ward Léonard group and speed variation systems for DC
motors was done. These led to the choice of an electronic speed controller of the ABB
DCS550-S type. In order to validate the choice of the drive, a simulation of the control
part and the power part of the drive with the MATLAB software in its SIMULINK
environment was carried out.
