1.

The right of informed consent to the subject involve in the experiment will be neglected
since the decision-making that will be done will come from the parents’ choice and not the
offspring themselves. This outstrips the future child of the option to agree or disagree with the
experiment and it is not easy or impossible to reverse since it has been done when he/she was
an embryo. The results will be visible once the baby is born and it would be possible that the
genetic engineering will have a negative effect to the child rather than a positive one.
Social issue would rise from the major differences in a GM person and a non-GM person
often revolving around discrimination depending on the beliefs, ideologies of the different
individuals. One might favor the GM person since his/her capabilities is much more advanced
compared to a non-GM individual or some might prefer non-GM because they are considered
as “normal” humans. Differences in one another can sometimes provide the hindrance towards
understanding one another. There might be a time where a GM or a non-GM person would be
considered a minority depending on the number of individuals involved.

2. I am pro-designer babies. Way back in Senior High School, I watch a number of

Kurzgesagt-in a Nutshell videos and I encountered a similar topic which convinced me to
support the creation of designer babies. They made an argument that if we have the
technology to create an improvement to the next generation of babies, we should use it to
remove the difficulties that we are facing today such as diseases that is inheritable and non-
inheritable, desired traits, mortality. If we have the means to alleviate those problems, why
shouldn’t we do that? I think that it can be considered as condemning the children into a world
of illnesses and adequate characteristics if we have the ability to significantly improve those by
genetically modifying them.
Genetic engineering of our own kind could be considered as our next step towards the
evolution of mankind. Enhancing the human capabilities boosts our survival as a species with
our increased health, strength, intelligence, and many more traits. It can also lead to further
interstellar travels which can help us look for other places to live outside our own planet and if
we manage to find one, we can design the next generation so that they are well-equipped to
live, tolerate, thrive on a new environment.
If we decided to move forward the pro-designer baby path, multiple scientist and
specialist can monitor the advancements that have been made and errors that happened so
that changes can be made to correct and/or improve certain conditions. Banning the research
would only leave the scientist and others wondering on what would be the outcome and how
much did we miss out because the experiment was halted. The current condition of the CRISPR
technology is not perfect but as every technology is, there would be a better version of this.
3. The superiority of designer babies presents an increased chance of negative behavioral
effects on both designer and non-designer babies. Having multiple enhanced traits can make
someone overconfident, condescending, egotistical since that person sees that his raw abilities
are greater towards a non-GM person or to another GM person as well.
Non-GM person might feel that he/she is inferior towards a GM person and becomes
uninspired and unmotivated because of the sheer difference in capabilities. He/she may think
that no matter what he/she does will not be adequate enough compared to other people and
thus falling into a pit of inferiority complex, unable to muster strength to try to become a better
person.
