1. A city’s wastewater contains 10 mg/L of PO4-3 and no Al+3 and the desired effluent
quality of phosphate is 1 mg/L, What will be the Al+3 concentration in the wastewater
after treating the phosphates? How much Al+3 should be added initially if there is no
Al+3 available?

2. A 5 ml sample of wastewater is diluted to 300 ml in a standard BOD bottle. The initial

DO level in the bottle is 7.5 mg/l and DO after 5 days at 20°C was found to be 0.5
mg/l. The BOD of the waste is reduced to 40 g/m3 when treated in an aerated
lagoon, find the aeration period. Given value of k is 0.23 d-1 at 20°C.

3. Design a septic tank for the hostels of engineering college. Given Number of hostels
= 3. Students/hostel = 200. Water supply = 120 lpcd. Detention period = 24 hrs And
sludge volume = 30 lt/cap/year
