What has happened in shipping
in the last 20 years?
Nothing!
Ships have become larger, and with that
also the demand on ports and fairways
We have the same principal eco
system!
We are a low value member of
the transportation and logistics
We have the same accident rate!
According to the latest EMSA report,
the accident rate is fairly static

PRACTICAL STEPS TOWARDS THE AUTONOMOUS SHIP

• Ship traffic control center

• Proof of concept for remote operations

• Proof of concept for auto approach

WHEN WILL THE UNMANNED SHIP BE AVAILABLE

It already exists – but with limited operational scenarios!

Example:

• Max 24 hours operation between ports with max 8 knots speed

• 2-3 fixed ports

• Exceptions from normal navigation rules, depending on the

actual traffic situation in the area of operation

CONCLUSION

• The autonomous ship has the potential to revolutionize coastal shipping, by

increasing safety and reducing cost – effectively moving more cargo
transportation back to the ship, the most environmentally friendly means of
cargo transportation in the world

• We know we cannot make this revolution happen by ourselves, this must

be a cooperation between authorities, research institutes, shipowners and
suppliers

• We already see this cooperation starting in Canada and are hopeful to

build on the work done so far
