Explanatory notes By maintaining a sufficiently high preloading in a bolt/nut assembly, spring washers are designed to prevent loosen- ing of the assembly which may be caused, for instance, by the olfect of setting. The specication of residual spring forces given in DIN 267-26 has made it possibe forthe fist time to assess the performance of such washers. The specitication that spring tock washers complying with the present standard can only be used effectively for bolt/ ‘nut assembles involving fasteners of a property class less than 88 reflects the current state of the art. This does not, however, rule out the manufacture of spring lock washers suitable for bolt/nut assemblies involving fasteners of property class 88. This has deen substantiated by tests, but Il is fecommanded that the washer manufacturer be Consulted before spring lock washers are used for such type of assembly and veriicstion required of thelr effective- ‘ness on the basis of tosts similar to those described in DIN 267-26, Type B spring washers are no longer specitied since they are less sultable for the proposed application than those ~ type A and do not meet the requirements specilid In DIN 267-26. However, sinco tho fiting dimensions of type B ais ‘equivalent to those of type A, interchangeabilty is not adversoly affoctod. Although type 8 washers have been dropped, the designation ‘type A’ has been retained so as to indicate that the
