To find the missing term in a pair of equivalent ratios follow the steps below:
Step 1. Multiply the means and the extremes. Use the n to denote the unknown.
Step 2. Divide the two sides of the equation by the number beside n.
Step 3. Check your answer using the cross-product rule.
When two ratios are equal it is called a proportion. Proportion can be written in
two ways: fractional form and colon form.
A way to check if a given set of ratios form a proportion or not is to use the cross-
product rule. This rule states that in a proportion, the product of the means is equal
to the products of the extremes.
To recognize if two ratios are in direct proportion, the increase or decrease in one
term is accompanied by a corresponding equal increase or decrease in the other term
Cross - products is used to check direct proportions by multiplying the means and
the extremes.
