Introduction about Research

Definition of Research
- A process of posing research problem, gathering information, determining relationships, and writing the paper
- It identifies problems, compares solutions, and offer better options.
- It requires critical reading and writing as well as problem-solving skills.
Research Tips
o Make sure to understand the requirements.
o Submit requirements on time.
o Make sure your topic is acceptable.
o Patiently go through each stage of the process.
o Deal with procrastination by doing what you need to do
o Avoid all forms of plagiarism
o Put in their calendar the requirements and their deadline.

Purposes of Research
1. To discover new facts about known phenomenon.
2. To find answers to problems.
3. Improve existing techniques and develop new products.
4. To order related, valid generalizations into systematized science.

Research vs. Problem Solving

Research
• There may not be problem, only interest in answering questions.
• A research problem is more rigorous and broader in scope.
• The research problem is not necessarily defined specifically.
• All research is intended to solve some kind of problem but it is not primarily the aim.
• Research is intended primarily to make contribution to general knowledge.
• Research deals with generalization
Problem-solving
• There is always a problem to be solved.
• A problem to be solved is rigorous and less broad.
• The problem to be solved has to be defined specifically.
• Problem-solving does not always involve research.
• Problem-solving is always intended to solve problems.
• Problem-solving is concerned with a specific problem and once the problem is solved that is the end of it.

Scientific Method of Research

o Determine or recognize the problem;
o Forming the hypothesis;
o Doing the library search;
o Design the study;
o Developing the instruments for data collection;
o Collecting the data;
o Analyzing the data;
o Determine the implications/conclusions from the findings; and
o Making recommendations for further research.

Designing the Study

In designing the study, the scientific method of research must be followed.
Aside from choosing the right problem, forming hypothesis and library research, it also includes deciding
on the methods of research to be used, the study population, the instrument for gathering data and its preparation,
sampling design, statistical treatment of data, and analysis and presentation of data.
