Coco Chanel was a French fashion designer; she founded the famous designer company “Chanel”.

She went against the society standards and created an amazing brand that we all know and love
today. Post-World War 1 Coco popularized the idea of more sporty, casual feminine and chic looks.
She replaced the ideal look, a “corseted silhouette” with a more modern “tomboyish” style. Coco
wanted freedom in how men and females dressed, she wanted to go against the ideology of women
only being capable of being housewives. She is known for her trademark suits and little black
dresses, she also launched her own perfume line in the 1920’s, the idea behind these timeless
dresses and suits was to make fashion more comfortable for women. Her most famous handbags are
the Quilted bag and the Boy bag; the boy bag goes for a more chic but industrial look with the
unique lock and heavy hardware. The Quilted bag, first released in 1995, Coco was not a fan of the
impracticality of clutch bags, so she decided to add a strap which was rebellious in way, but it quickly
became a fashion favourite and is still one of the most iconic bags today. Usually, black dresses were
worn when mourning and was seen as distasteful if worn on any other occasion, but when Vouge
published a sketch from Coco in 1926, Vouge called this “a uniform for all women of taste”. Coco
was rarely ever seen without a pile of faux pearls around her neck, Coco reasoned that women could
properly accessorize their outfits with faux jewellery instead of sticking to a few simple and basic
pieces. In 1921 Coco released one of the most iconic scents, Chanel No 5 and it was famously worn
by Marilyn Monroe. Overall, Coco believed that there was more potential to fashion other than
corsets and large dresses, her main motive throughout her life was to make fashion more
comfortable for women and to incorporate practicality into fashion whilst keeping it chic.
