ACTIVITY
Choose one of the poems of Melvin Banngolay. Conduct a research about both the
literary pieces and the author, then answer the following questions:
1.What does the title mean? Analyze the title and reflect on what it means:

Huwag mong ikahiya, bagkus ipanata

Na gamitin lagi ang wikang pambansa
Sa paghahabi ng mga makukulay na tula
At pakikipagtalastasan araw araw sa iba
The title is “Ang ating sariling wika” in English “Our own language”. In my
opinion, the title is about the language here in the Philippines. As I read and
analyze the poem the author which is Melvin Banngolay, he encourages us
Filipinos to use and be proud of our own language. As I read the poem my
reflection is it touches my heart. As a student, and as a Filipino it touches my
heart. Some youth today doesn’t appreciate our language because of their
mindset that if you speak Filipino that means you are poor and if you speak
English that means you are rich. The significance of our native language is it
plays an essential role in establishing our identity. Learning the native language
signifies learning the same history and culture of our parents, relatives, and even
the generations before and after. The self-awareness that we belong to our native
country gives confidence and stability. The national language of our country
makes us Filipinos unique from others, if we respect and speak our language, it
can be a favored source of interaction.

First, the author used a rhyming words at the end of the verse. Second, he
identifies his reader so that he knows how he can build connections with them.
