ACTIVITY
Choose one of the poems of Melvin Banngolay. Conduct a research about both the
literary pieces and the author, then answer the following questions:
1.What does the title mean? Analyze the title and reflect on what it means:
Identify different poetic devices and how they convey the poem’s message.
POETIC DEVICES HOW THEY CONVEY THE POEM’S MESSAGE
Imagery – creating The author use imagery by the use of sense of smell,
pictures with words he mentioned the word “worse than a smelly fish”.
Alliteration – repeating The author repeats the word “wika”, and “Pilipino” on
the same letter the poem.
2. Identify the theme (central idea) of the poem. How was the theme conveyed in the poem’s
message?
The central idea of the poem is about how we should use, protect, and
respect our own language. The theme was conveyed by using a lot of efforts.
First, the author used a rhyming words at the end of the verse. Second, he
identifies his reader so that he knows how he can build connections with them.
Third, he uses poetic devices like metaphor, tone, point of view, imagery and
alliteration. Fourth, the emotion of the author feels at the poem . These feelings
help display the poems overall theme.
Using the table below, compare the three literary pieces based on observable context (e.g.
historical, social, cultural) and literary elements.
