Chapter 8 Responses to Discussion Questions

1. How can a music educator prepare for the inclusion of a student with
enhanced cognition in the music classroom or ensemble?
Music educators can be prepared to answer difficult questions, teach material in
different multisensory ways, encourage and creative safe and welcoming
environments, respect and encourage creative thinking, and being active in the team
for that student(s).
2. What specific strategies would be employed in a general music classroom for
a third-grade student who has already mastered the curriculum for
elementary general music?
Specific strategies could include providing creativity outlets for these and all
students to show what they know and recognize the achievements of the students.
3. How can secondary music ensemble conductors differentiate instruction in a
small or large ensemble setting to meet the needs of students at various
levels of cognitive ability?
For students who may understand material better than other students, this could be
an opportunity for them to develop/grow leadership skills as they use what they
know to help others. Material can be taught in many different multisensory ways so
that learning caters to the needs of all students.
4. Which strategies outlined in Chapter 4 would be effective when working with
students who have enhanced cognition abilities and also have challenges in
the area of communication?
A good strategy or tool that could be used are PECS, but instead of using them to
solidify information, use them when the student needs a break from instruction. As
a way to quiz a student on the information they know, while also providing a vessel
for them to communicate.
