I don’t like /I don’t
recommend/ I wouldn’t do this if I were you
значенням, наприклад not worth doing, useless, dangerous.
• moreover, also, too, as well
• however, but, though, on the other hand
• compared with, in comparison with
• because, because of, as a result, therefore
• so, then, in conclusion, in short, after all, as a result
• so that, in order to
• for example, for instance
• firstly, secondly, finally, first, next, then, after that, at first використовують, щоб
• this means that використовують, щоб зробити висновок
• if, in case використовують, щоб пояснити умову дії
Thanks for your letter / I’m so sorry I haven’t written for so
long / I was glad to hear from you / Your last letter was a real surprise / It was great to hear
that… / I was happy to hear…
I’m glad you passed your test / Sounds like you had a great time
in…, Great news about your…
Give my love / regards
to…, Looking forward to seeing you / to hearing from you / Hope to hear from you soon тощо.
• tell about your friend, when and where you met him/her,
• describe interests you share and your favourite pastimes,
• mention your friend’s characteristic features that you like.

Dear Julia,
Thanks a lot for your letter. It was great to hear from you. My congratulations on
finishing school!!!
In your last letter you’ve asked me about my best friend. Well, frankly speaking,
my friend Natali and I have known each other for many years. We got acquainted
when we were six years old and went to school together.
When we were children, we collected Barbie dolls and this hobby made us close
friends. We spend much time together. On weekdays we go in for sports. We are
fond of tennis as it’s a very beautiful kind of sports. Last year we even took part in a
tennis tournament among school students. We didn’t win, but we weren’t the last
as well! In summer we like to go swimming and sunbathing together. You know
there’s a beautiful lake in our town and we enjoy swimming in it!
We are really good friends. Natali is a very nice girl, she’s kind and sincere. What I like
most about her is that I can fully rely on her. I can tell Natali about all my problems
and fears and I know she’ll help me if she can. She understands me and my feelings
better than anyone. And she knows she can always rely on me as well!
I’ve got to go now (mum’s calling me for lunch). Could you write me about your best
friend? Hope to hear from you soon.
Lots of love,
Olya

I’m here on holiday with my school friends. We’re having a great time here in
Odessa! We’re staying in a small hostel in the very centre of the city. It’s rather cheap
and is close to everything – main sights, shops and of course the sea!
The weather’s absolutely gorgeous. The sun’s out all the time and it’s very hot. We
swim every day in the morning and in the evening. The sea is really warm! Met lots
of new people as well.
I’ve already been to Deribasovska street, Primorskiy blvd and have even went up
and down Potyomkinska stairs. The views are really stunning! Tomorrow we’re
going to the Opera House. They say it’s fantastic!

Dear Editor,
I have never written a letter to the editor of a programme before, but now I am
willing to share my utter thoughts on the topic of teens’ hobbies which was
discussed in your programme and my own ones in particular.
For me, having a hobby is a necessity but never a waste of time. As I am an active
person, I long for changes and like to get away from civilization, camping along
with ecotourism, is my cup of tea. It’s a cheap way to have a rest, to improve my
health, to train myself physically and to enjoy nature. What is more, my hobby
teaches me to overcome any obstacles and become strong and self-reliant. I can
admit that my motto is “A hobby a day keeps the doldrums away”.
Besides, my hobby has really changed my life. I have become healthier and more
confident as it has boosted my self-esteem. In addition, it helps me to make new
friends, to deal with stress and keep my life fresh.
Considering everything, I must admit that our life is hard and dull without hobbies.
Finally, I hope that you will read my letter in live broadcast and it will definitely help
some teens to pick up their hobbies and open their minds to new possibilities and
positive challenges.
Truly yours,
Timothy Blacke

I would be very pleased if…, Will

• suggest the possible benefits of such a club
Write at least 150 words. Do not use real name or addresses. Start your letter in an
appropriate way.
We are a group of students with wide experience in organising social events such as
the Protect Our Planet festival which is held every spring in our district. As a matter
of fact, we are particularly concerned with the quality of life in our neighbourhood.
The problem is that at present the young people who live here do not have much to
do. As a result, crime and vandalism are on the rise in vicinity. We strongly believe
that the club would distract young people from engaging in illegal activities by
providing them with more purposeful ways of spending their time.
Moreover, as your company specialises in fashion for young people, the club
members could help in promoting your products.
Thank you for considering our application and we look forward to hearing from
you.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Leschenko

Taking a year gap between upper-secondary school and university has become
popular among many young people. This year off provides a break after many
years of formal study. Some graduates use this time to travel, others start working.
Although having a year off has clear benefits, the drawbacks also should be taken
into consideration.
There is a number of benefits of taking a gap year. Firstly, students who travel away
from home have a chance to develop independence and self-confidence. Secondly,
living in a foreign country enables students to explore different cultures, traditions
and viewpoints and this would make their mind broader in the future. Thirdly,
when these students work, they get practical experience which will help them to
understand what career to choose. Also they might save some money that would
support them in further education.
However, there are few drawbacks to be mentioned. The main drawback is that
school graduates might forget some essential knowledge which is usually necessary

to enter the university and they could lose the study habits. Consequently, they
might face some difficulties when they come back and decide to get a university
degree. Apart from that, not every young person can afford to travel around the
world and many of them end up sitting at home, which can be very demotivating.
In conclusion, taking a gap year is an individual decision. Although there are some
obvious advantages on personal and professional levels, such disadvantages as
forgetting essential knowledge and even loss of motivation for studying cannot be
ignored.
From social point of
view…, from the angle of…),
As it is … it helps to …).
Surely, it would be
impossible to give full justice to…, To come back to the point raised at the beginning…).
Nowadays it is common for young people in many countries to take a gap year after
graduating from secondary school. Many people use a year break for travelling.
Another reason to be mentioned is that taking a gap year will prepare school
graduates for higher education psychologically and socially. School graduates
are not fully matured. At the university a student will meet with different types of
people which requires mental maturity.
To sum up, taking a gap year is the best way for young people to get a clear
perspective of what they hope to do in their lives. In my opinion, such students will
be more effective and motivated in their education and career.
Have you ever wondered…? Why do people say that…? Can
you imagine …? What do you think about …? Are you one of those people who ...?
I’m sure you’d agree…, I must tell you about …, You wouldn’t believe…
with, first of all, what’s more, another point is тощо.

If you want to have a taste of Ukraine, have a perfect holiday or just spend a
weekend in a romantic place, you should definitely visit L’viv. It is the most visited
city in the country, I think. And it’s my favourite one!
Let’s start with attractions. L’viv has plenty of museums. First you can visit a drug
store museum, a magical shop, an ancient castle or a history museum. Then you
can have a walk in the ancient center of the city. For me, the most romantic place
in L’viv is High Castle. It’s a viewing platform standing on a man-made hill close to
the city centre which offers stunning panoramas of the L’viv skyline. And it is also a
place where you can find artists, designers and other creative people all looking for
inspiration and new ideas.
There many things that make L’viv a special place. One of them is connected with
food. You can always find nice restaurants or cafés in L’viv, depending on your
tastes. You can find traditional Ukrainian restaurants made in a military style with
secret passwords or small cafes serving food at affordable prices. And, of course,
the smell of coffee which you can feel everywhere you go: in the streets, in beautiful
medieval cathedrals, operas or museums. As I’m a fan of legends, I fell in love with
the House of Legends which astonished me with both design and cuisine.
You will never forget this city with its cozy streets, stunning architecture and the
smell of coffee and chocolate! There is nowhere else like it and I highly recommend
you visit L’viv and see it or yourself.

Tip 1
tion how long you’ve known each other, напишіть We’ve been friends for three years, але не
We met at a club a long time ago.
Tip 2
«які ти маєш плани» передбачає використання структури be going to або present con-

Dear Mr. Collins, Dear Mrs. Simons, Dear
Yours faithfully.
Tip
I would be grateful if you could …, It would be much appreciated if
you could inform me …

Write at least 150 words. Do not use your real name or any other personal information.
Tip
Tip
One disadvantage of end-of-a-year exams
is that they do not truly reflect students’ knowledge. This is evident from…
Some people believe that exams are the best way to check the student’s knowl-
edge. Others are convinced that exams do not always accurately measure the level

Write 180-200 words. Remember to give the general statement of the problem, support
your views by arguments and draw a conclusion.

your views by arguments and draw a conclusion.
Tip
замість I’m writing because І want get a scholarship you give to
students ми пишемо І am writing to apply for a scholarship which you offer to students.
I’m / I’ll / I can’t / I don’t ми пишемо I am / I will / I cannot / I do not.
Tip
I have some experience in the field of voluntary work. / I am keen
on studying history and social sciences. / I am a person of great ambition and determination.

I was really surprised by …, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw …, I was more
than shocked тощо.

secondly, furthermore, finally, thus, however, as a result тощо.

I hate…, It’s disgusting…, I can’t stand…

ble, terrible та дієслів на кшталт hate, can’t stand тощо. The food was ter-
rible and I hated the service напишіть Neither the food nor the service met my expectations
