Interview Narrative

As part of this study, I interviewed a social worker to know the nature of their
work as well as how they manage it to do. Recently I asked some questions regarding
her field of profession. She is Mrs. Gregonia D. Hornilla, a Registered Midwife in the
Municipal Health Office of the Municipal Government of Taysan. She is 44 years old
and graduated from Golden Gate Colleges with a course of Bachelor of Art in Midwifery.
Currently residing at Sitio Putol, Barangay Pag-asa, Taysan, Batangas. She was a
secretary for almost 10 years in Palacios ENT Clinic at Batangas City. She is now in her
third year of being a midwife in the Municipal Health Center and has taken some
seminars like Basic Life Support.

Considering her answer to all the questions, I may say that she is confident
enough about what she is doing as a social worker. In the first question which is
'Describe your specific setting on which you rendered your service' she mentioned that
she had two workplaces. The first setting is the main health center which is the
Municipal Health Office of Municipal Government of Taysan wherein it has a birth
center, laboratory, and other health faculties. She also said that it must always be kept
clean because it is prone to all viruses and bacteria. Keeping the cleanliness and
hygiene of a place is a must priority for everyone especially nowadays. Prioritizing
cleanliness in this place is very essential because we all know that it is a public health
center and there's a couple of people who wants to be treated. She mentioned that the
employees and co-workers were very kind and respectful. I am no longer wonder how a
social worker behaves because they must possess this kind of skill to be an effective
social worker. She was also assigned to three barangay health centers in Taysan. I
must say that every social worker has a responsibility to do in our community. Their
role in our society is important, they not only stick to one place but many more places to
deliver the help that people needed the most. I believe a social worker like Mrs. Hornilla
has a wide array of responsibilities in the areas of caring, curing, and changing. She has
multiple roles in the Municipal of Taysan to provide the necessary needs of every

The second question is 'what are the problems you encountered in your job?',
she said that she encountered inconsiderate patients who did not accept their
explanation to them. This must be the common problem of a social worker in their
profession because every day they were dealing with a different person with different
perspectives. It can be a challenge for every social worker when they encounter this.
They must behave with a lot of patience to avoid miscommunications with all the
patients.

The third question is 'what solutions did you find for these?' she said that “I spoke
to them well and listen carefully to them". In analyzing what solutions did she do, it is
essential to talk and listen to the patients especially if the patients don't fully understand
what you are trying to say. There must be a client-worker relationship because the
client needs help in social functioning and the worker is in the position to offer help.
Being a good communicator is also being a good listener.

The last question is 'Do you find your job to be self-fulfilling?' she said that her
job was self-fulfilling because it makes her happy whenever she helped those in need
and her income was quite high that makes her provide all the needs of her family. It is
said to be self-fulfilling if you want what are you doing. It seems that she wants what
she doing every day as a social worker. Choosing this kind of profession is worth it,
after all, seeing your clients or patients enhancing their social functioning with your help
is heart-melted. Social work also brings a lot of opportunities like it is in-demand and
has an income for yourself nor your family.

To conclude, social work is not an easy nor difficult profession. It's your choice to
grab the opportunities within your hand. It takes time to be an effective social worker but
it is worthwhile in all aspects. As we know how a social worker does and manage the
difficult task in practice setting I gave my full respect to all social worker over the world.
They have the skill to achieve the given object to fulfilling their duty in individuals,
groups, and community. As I interviewed Mrs. Gregonia D. Hornilla, everyone can be a
social worker in their way of unity and giving importance to the people who solve their
problems of adjustment in changing patterns of society.
