Basic Calculus (add act)

B. Locate and classify the critical point of y = 2 / 3x3 − 2x2 − 6x + 2

Solution:

y = 2x - 4x -6

y = 2(x + 1)(x - 3)

0 = 2(x + 1)(x-3)

2(x + 1)(x - 3) = 0

(x + 1)(x - 3) = 0

x+1=0x-3=0

x=-1x=3

Critical points ( -1, 3 )

Solution:

y = 2 / 3x3 − 2x2 − 6x + 2

y = 2 / 3 (- 1) - 2(1) - 6(-1) + 2

y = 2 / 3 - 2 - 6(-1) + 2

y=-2/3+6

y = 16 / 3

The critical point is at ( - 1, 16 / 3 ) which is the maximum point.

Solution:

y = 2 / 3x3 − 2x2 − 6x + 2

y = 2 / 3 (3)2 - 2(3)2 - 6(2) + 2

y = -18 + 2

y = - 16

The critical point is at ( 3, -16 ) which is the minimum point.
