ee‘he Brandt Vacuum Degasser separates problem gas
tom costly drilling fiuids. The unit utilizes an
rmultile leaf surface area to spread the
{2f-cut mud into the thinnest possible sheets so that
tnrained g@s bubbles ere brought to the surface,
where they are pulled from the mud by the vacuum
inthe chamber. See Figure 1
The gos is then vented from the top of the chamber
a the degassed mud flows out the bottom. No
mud and gas can occur, and no
ineficient cyclonic separetions are required.

Prnciples of Operation
Te Brent Vacuum Degasser uses three principles to
fenove g3s from mud: reducing internal pressure,
foving the mud in thin sheets, and velocity. The
fetced internal pressure (vacuum) enlarges the ges
Luts in the mud so they may be more easily
fenoied om the fluid, Flowing the mud in thin
Sets creases turbulence and ensures these gas
titles are brought to the surface and can be
sepated. The mud also impacts the leaves and the
Ste ofthe tank with enough velocity to break ‘ree
fe remaining entrained gas. See Figure 8.
Tooperate the degasser, tui on the vacuum pump
fis, The vacuum created inside the vessel draws the
fuil nto the degesser just as a person draws soda
i their mouth through 2 straw. The level in the
ves! wil rise until the float valve depresses the
tte way valve (Figure 9), and the vacuum pump

Never tun the compressor without oil.
Fane Oil Change

‘When changing oil, never use kerosene or

‘ening agents is dangerous and is absolutely
picibited. Use a regular flushing oi for this
pupese.

"1Pston Ring Replacement
Fison ring replacement is usually considered
rexssaty when @ compressor does not meet its
romnl at delivery or when its oil consumption is
‘arsdered to be too great. f the compressor’s
roma air delivery hes dropped off or if the oil
tonsumption of the compressor is considered to be
‘aossive, ii may be an indication of several possible
‘auses of trouble, one of which may be that the
fison rings could either be broken or worn. Worn
fisun rings can often be @ contributing factor in
Gene in performance of a compressor that hes
ten in service for a long period of time.
Gilusage should not exceed 4 ounces daily. f too
mish o's being used fst make sure that the unit
vi ot ovefiled. See Frame Oil Change Section. i
teollevel is correct, the cylinder assembly must be
‘epited following this procedure.
Noe, before installing new replacement piston

‘icennect any tube lines to the air head
Remove the air head attaching screws and
waters and then remove the entire air head
‘sembly from the cylinder.
Femove the air head gasket. Ifthe gasket sticks, a
thn blade may be used to pry the gasket loose
fron the air head or the cylinder.
Lfemove the cylinder ttaching screws and washers
and then carefully remove the cylinder from over
ie fision and piston rings
Remove the cylinder-to-frame gasket
Remove the piston from its connecting rod and
thn remove all of the old piston rings from the
piton. See Figures 21 and 22.
4 Thoroughly clean the air head by brushing or
Sueping lightly to remove any accumulated carbon
feyosits. Make sure the gasket surface is
ihercughly cleaned of any gasket particles
Thoroughly clean the cylinder of any accumulated
Ai, using 2 non-flammable safety solvent. Pay
particular attention to the cleaning of the cylinder

ve
6. Thoroughly clean the piston of any accumulated
oil, using @ non-flammable safety solvent. Pay
particular attention to the cleaning of the piston
Ting grooves and the oil return holes in the oil
control wiper ring grooves.
Inspect the cylinder bore for any signs of scoring
and scuffing. If the cylinder bore shows any signs
‘of being scored or worn, as indicated by visible
ridging at the end of the ring travel, it must be
replaced: otherwise, effective oil control will not be
established even with the new piston rings
Inspect the piston for any signs of scoring or for
‘any indication of cracked or broken lands which
would require replacement of the piston. If the
piston shows no signs of being scored or of
having cracked or broken lands, check the general
condition of the ring grooves for any signs of
excessive wear. Wearing of the ring grooves may
cause “tapering” of the grooves which would
result in excessive clearance between the piston
ring and their corresponding grooves.
Assemble the new piston rings on the piston by
first applying compressor lubricating oll to the
piston ring Grooves. To eliminate the possibility of
breaking or distorting @ piston ring, always use @
piston ring expander and never pass one ring over
another. if a piston ring expander is not available,
spread the piston rings only far enough to allow
them to be placed over the piston. The bottom oil
control wiper ring is always installed first and then
the adjacent one, when used, then each
