a print and paste decal aside a hot rod with months of
paint and airbrush work ... or is it?

highlighting some of the nicest paint jobs we’ve seen
in years and one of the slickest wraps to date. We

“Godzilla,” joins the standard
6.2L gas V-8 and updated
6.7L diesel in Super Duty’s gas
engine stable.
The 7.3L gas V-8 engine delivers
high performance in a compact package. Based on
decades of commercial engine experience, this 7.3L
is expected to be the most powerful gas V-8 in its
class—providing durability, ease of maintenance, and
the towing and payload capability customers want.
It uses an all-new cam-in-block, overhead valve
architecture with cast iron block and forged steel
crankshaft for maximum durability. Port injection
with variable-valve timing optimizes the intake and
exhaust to match performance with workloads. Oil
jets cool the pistons under heavy loads.
The new powerplant, along with the new
Ford-designed and built 10-speed automatic
transmission, was designed for improved fuel
efficiency while towing heavy payloads, so those
with heavy trailers may be especially interested in
checking out the 2020 Super Duty lineup once it hits
Ford dealerships later in the year.

renderings with us, showing off
the 2019 Ram 3500 Mega Cab
being built by Elite Customs in
Sparks, Nevada, for SEMA 2019.
Dubbed “Black Tie Affair,” the black
and white-themed truck is owned by
Ryan Walker and will feature some wild accessories to
show off what can be done with a new Ram. A 16-inch
Ultimate Air Ride lift featuring Air Lift Performance
components will take the truck sky-high, with plenty
of room for the 28x16 American Force wheels and
42-inch Fury Offroad tires. A custom grille from Boost
Bars, Road Armor Identity Series bumpers, an Alea
Leather interior, and Fiberwerx wide fenders and
bedsides round out the other major additions
to the truck. This will no doubt be one of the
highlights in Vegas come this November.

I
T’S BEEN SAID THAT A MOTHER’S HEART IS
A SON’S CLASSROOM. One of the strongest
bonds a man can have is with his mother.
Growing up, sons may endure some hard
times, but through their mother’s example
of endurance they learn to keep going even
in the hard times. How a son treats his
mother is reflected in his ability to love, respect
and treat others. The strong bond Wilkey Pierre
and his mother always shared influenced and
formed his life in the most positive way. Wilkey,
affectionately known as Wilk, was originally
from Haiti but resides in South Florida and grew
up in the heart of the lowrider culture, belonging
to one of the most popular car clubs.
Matt Daisimile was Wilk’s good friend, and he
owned a custom 2000 GMC Sierra with air ride and
a Denali front end. It was during that lowrider build
that Wilk’s passion began to shift to a different field,
so Wilk worked out a trade with Matt for the GMC
and took the truck to his first truck show in Florida.
During that show, a random guy walked up to Wilk and
commented that while his truck was nice, it was the
same as all the other trucks around. After Wilk arrived
home from that show, he told his wife that he was
going all in.
His first step was to tear out the interior and seats
from the truck so that he wouldn’t able to drive the
truck, guaranteeing that the work remained constant.
He perused many back issues of Truckin Magazine,
obtaining fresh ideas for changing the interior.

YEARS NOW. Well, kind of.
The truth is, she watched her
husband Brian play with his
trucks at home, and she’d
often find that he was nowhere to be found
when there was a show nearby. Mikki eventually
got tired of Brian being the one having all the
fun, so she decided that she wanted a custom
truck of her own. As you can see, she didn’t pull
any punches with her first official foray into
the scene.
She set her sights on a ’68 Chevy Suburban that
had already been a project and laid out a plan to
outdo her husband’s rides. OK, so maybe her plan
wasn’t as malicious as we’re making it seem, but
let’s just say that there may have been some friendly
competition involved.
Since Mikki already knew about all the cool shops in
the area, it didn’t take long for her to arrange to drop
off the Suburban with Jeremy Rice at Tre 5 Customs in
Peoria, Arizona. As most everyone in the truck world
knows, the dude can boogie when it comes to building
quality custom stuff. Jeremy and the team at Tre 5
quickly took the helm. They began by tearing the old
SUV apart in preparation for an onslaught of custom
bits that would completely transform the Sub from
stock to Mikki’s dream ride in the course of a year.

Joseph had been looking for

something roomy enough for
everyone to roll around in, be it
to the local cruise spot or a show
anywhere along the coasts of
Florida, for that matter. That
meant something with more seats
and hopefully more doors. The
Dodge was perfect, and the fact
that it had already had a head
start with numerous mods done by
a previous owner saved Joseph a
bunch of time and money.
For instance, the truck was
already ‘bagged and notched
with 22-inch Bonspeed Tsunami
billets, which was obviously a huge
plus since Joseph could focus on
other stuff that would make the
truck his own. The Dodge had
already been on the show scene
for a bit, so some freshening up
and further customization in other
departments were high on Joseph’s
priority list.
The interior was reworked
with glossy red paint on the
dash, door panels, and custom
center console, which really made
things pop a ton more than the

LICENSE. Coty smiles when he recalls the pictures
he drew of bagged trucks while he was still in
elementary school. Amazingly, a few of those
early drawings are quite similar to his slammed
Colorado, the truck that’s been undergoing
relentless refinement for the past eight years.
The adventure began on his 17th birthday when his
father surprised him with the ultimate gift, this 2005
Colorado Crew Cab. Coty had a flood of ideas with
dozens of changes planned for the truck, prioritizing
the most important based on time and budget. An
avid stereo fan, he had already built a unique car
stereo that he was able to repurpose into the Colorado.
Once the rear seat was removed, the bass portion
was established with the full-width sub enclosure
containing the pair of 12-inch Orion XTR subs. They are
powered by a 1,000-watt Memphis amp, augmented
with a five-farad Stinger capacitor to ensure plenty of
reserve power for the bass notes. The front stage is a
complex mix of eight 6.5-inch Orion XTR component
sets with two in each front door, one in each rear door
and a pair in the new center console. A 600-watt Orion

up and it also leads to a more precise magnetic pick-up signal. A brass terminal cap and rotor are

Painting outdoors with a slight wind and
humidity was not an ideal situation, but
I figured it was as “real world” as it gets
and represented what many of us have to
work with when working out of a home
garage. Except in this case, the garage
was full of stuff I didn’t want to risk
getting paint on.
All of this being said, this was way
easier than I thought it was going to
be, and I’ve shot my fair share of stories
in body shops. Every item I received
from AutomotiveTouchup had detailed
instructions on the package or can, so all I
had to do was follow each step and I was
good to go. In fact, it looks so good that
now I’m going to have to polish the rest of
the truck’s faded finish to match.

01 I started by wiping off the dust that had accumulated on the

fender from having it in storage for a few weeks. A lump of damp

05 Once I was done sanding, I rinsed off the

fender with water a few times and dried it off.
06 Because of all the wet-sanding, there was plenty of water
hidden in the nooks and crannies of the fender, so I also used
an air gun to blast it all out.
07 ABOVE LEFT & RIGHT. Another

of these lint-free paint prep surface
wipes, which I used to clean the fender
after sanding, but prior to applying
any chemicals. This is one of those
details you don’t want to miss, as
it will greatly improve your odds of
getting good results by removing any
oil, grease or wax that may be present
on the panel.
08 RIGHT. Yet another neat

product, this aerosol trigger
is easy on the fingers and makes you
feel like a pro. Your index fingers will
thank you, as this AutomotiveTouchup
version is nicer than the ones I’ve used
on occasion from other suppliers.

09 It was finally time to lay down some primer, and I made sure to
spray in an even left-to-right pattern, overlapping each pass.
The instructions specified to wait 5-10 minutes between coats. I ended
up spraying four coats, repositioning the fender at one point for better
coverage.
10 After waiting 30 minutes from the final primer coat, I used 600-
grit to knock down the primer to a smoother finish. I then rinsed
off the fender again and allowed it to dry. 11 Not bad so far, eh? My nervousness was quickly dwindling, as this
was looking a whole lot better than I expected.
12 I was ready to start spraying the base coat. As the instructions say,
the metallic paint had to be sprayed with light coats to avoid going
too dark. I began by spraying the hard edges to make sure I wouldn’t

appear as though I was getting enough coverage early on, but
a few coats later things started to shape up. Again, 5-10 minutes
end up sanding through the color later on. between coats, slow and steady.

15 Once the final coat was dry, I stowed the

fender in the garage and allowed it to cure
overnight.
14I waited another 30 minutes before applying the clear coat, waiting 15
minutes between each wet coat for a total of five coats.
16 Time to shine! The following morning, I
wet-sanded the fender with 1,500-grit, being
careful to not sand through the bodylines.
17 The final step

involved using
rubbing compound to
further bring out the
gloss in the clear.
18 What do you
think? I’ll be
polishing the fender
with more rubbing
compound, and
eventually wax,
once the paint has
fully cured. I still
can’t believe I spray
bombed a fender,
and it’s even harder
to believe still that it
turned out this nice!

GROUND UP.
Michael Chorba
II of Imperial,
Missouri, actually purchased
his 1999 Dodge Dakota with a
large chunk of the work already
completed. Let’s be honest for
a second: That is actually pretty
smart, considering all the time
and money he probably saved.
But Michael had no intention of
leaving it exactly “as-is,” or even
just buttoning up a few minor NEVER SATISFIED AND ALWAYS

pneumatic 33-valve block set
up, which was much more to
his liking. Not stopping there,
he installed a 5-gallon stainless
air tank as well as a pair of Viair
480 compressors to keep those
2,600-pound air bags stable and
ready upon command.
It’s hard to consider this truck a
mini when it has that big 5.2L V-8
with under 5,000 original miles.

start driving this thing way more

suede headliner, which was a major focus of
Michael’s revamp. Having done almost the
entire interior himself, he spent hours picking
and choosing the details of what would be
placed inside the Dakota.

Dodge’s cub cab.
Never satisfied and always striving for
perfection, Michael has no shortage of ideas
for changes and additions to his Dakota.
For now, he’s having a blast spending time
with friends and family enjoying the truck.
