The Importance of Process Safety Management (PSM)

What is the importance of the process safety management in our daily life? Why it is very important? And what benifits that
we can get in the importance of PSM? From the word safety and process, process safety management is a process in any
activity or combination of activities including any use, storage, manufacturing, handling or the on-site movement of highly
hazardous chemicals. The threat imposed by toxic, flammable, and reactive liquids and gasses in industrial operations
continues to affect the sector. While these are not new threats, they impact virtually every business that uses chemicals as
a component of their industrial processes. The probability of an accidental release is high when these materials are not
properly controlled increasing the potential for occupational disasters. The nation develop on the processing services of
companies that handle hazardous chemicals. In a wide variety of industries, processing highly hazardous chemicals can
result in a number of dangers, including the unexpected release of toxic, reactive, or flammable gases and liquids. If proper
safety precautions are not taken, these risks can lead to disaster.

As the evidenced by the many unfortunate tragedies that have occurred at industrial processing facilities throughout, the
potential for danger is serious and ever-present. Workers in these industries may face risks of plant and refinery explosions,
fires, and other types of industrial accidents. Oilfield accidents and toxic or chemical exposure are also significant risks
workers face. As the potential for disaster is so large when hazardous chemicals are present, employers in industries that
use them are required to ensure that dangerous materials are properly controlled. The Occupational Safety & Health
Administration (OSHA) establishes federal standards to ensure that certain hazardous materials are transported, handled,
and used safely.

The Standards for Process Safety Management (PSM) cover a wide range of industries, including General industry,
Construction, Chemical facilities, Petroleum refineries and plants. Regardless of the industry, PSM standards are crucial to
ensuring that workers are provided a safe work environment. Some crucial points of PSM include, the Standards for
equipment operation and maintenance requirements, including appropriate action for signs of leaks, corrosion, and other
unsafe conditions. And Standards for following correct operating, safety, and emergency procedures. And Regulations for
mixing, separating, and storing hazardous process materials. And Employees should be informed and educated about
which chemicals are reactive and which chemicals present toxic, fire, or explosive hazards. Lastly, Employers and workers
should have an emergency plan for any adverse incident or unusual process condition.
