SPEAKING

1. Attitude
When you deliver speech, remember the points below :
a. understand what you will deliver
b. be calm but self-confident
c. focus on your audience ( by making eye contact )
d. speak loudly & clearly in moderate speed (make sure they get the point you deliver)
e. show your respect & attention (by giving chance to propose questions / discussing)

2. Obstacles & Tips


a. A speaker may forget the parts of his speech. You can make a small note contains the
points of your speech. In case you forget part of your speech, use some utterances below
to take time :
- Well, in fact there’s something I want to explain about …..
- As far as I concern, there’s an important thing you should know that …..
- As I have previously said, I would like to inform that …..
- Let me tell you something that …..
- Frankly, I miss something that I have to tell. That is ….

b. In case you feel nervous, here are the things you can do :
- Take a deep breath, hold it for a moment, then release it slowly
- Self-suggestion: tell to yourself in your heart that you can, that everything will be
okay, that you can deliver the speech well, etc.
- Hold something to release your nervous, such as : the table in front of you, a pen, or
the pocket of your trousers. It might be helpful for an escape.
- Avoid the eye contact with your audience but stare the tip of their hairs. It will give an
effect as if you stare them.

3. Opening
Before you start delivering speech, you need to greet your audience. Here are some
greetings you may need:
- Good morning ladies and gentlemen
- Good afternoon my (respectful) audience
- Good morning my (dear) friends
- Good afternoon my (beloved) classmates
After that, you can introduce yourself. Here are some possible utterances :
- First of all, let me introduce myself.
- Before delivering my speech, I would like to introduce myself.
- First of all, before delivering my speech, I’d like to introduce myself.
- I’d like to deliver my speech, but please let me introduce myself first.
- I’d like to deliver my speech, but I wish you’d like to let me introduce myself.

Then you can mention your name


- My name is …………… but you can call me ………
- My full name is ………… but please call me ………
- My dear audience, my full name is …….. but some people call me ……..
- My full name is …………. my dear audience, please just call me ………..

4. Speech
You can start your speech by mentioning the title.
- In this occasion, I would like to deliver a speech about ……
- Today, I would like to present you about ……
- This evening, I’d like to perform a presentation about ……
- Dear audience, now it’s time for me to explain about …….
- My audience, time has come for me to describe about …….

In delivering speech, explain in detail. The 5 W & 1 H can be useful guidance.

When you deliver speech, make sure that you make your audience understand by
checking their responses. Use questions below :
- Do you get my point ?
- Do you get my idea ?
- Do you understand what I’m explaining about ?
- Do you agree with my statement ?
- Do you have any idea to express ?
- Do you have any questions ?
- Is there anything you want to ask
- Is there any question ?

5. Closing
When you want to finish your speech, use the following utterances :
- My dear audience, that’s all my speech.
- My dear audience, this is the end of my speech.
- My dear audience, I’m afraid but I have to finish my presentation.
- My dear audience, now it’s the time for me to finish my explanation.
Then you can say :
- Thanks for your attention. See you.
- Thank you for your kind attention. Good bye.
- Thank you for all your attentions. We’ll meet again in the next session. Bye.
Assignment : Choose an interesting and useful topic related to your study. Present it as
interesting as you can. Practice it in front of the mirror many times. Do it to make sure your
performance and utterance are well enough to be performed. Then, record it. Don’t forget to
review your record. Revise it if necessary before you submit it.
