Pane rae“S20 Paulo, Brazil. is where wellve.
Ikis 0 crazy and so huge, anything
that you would ever want to see can
be seeninthestreots. We don't
know ifSao Paulois the ony city
Wie this, there must be otherhidden
cities lke this. In Sao Paulo, if you
with to see someone starving, wall
around the black. fyouwith to see
millionaire, valk around the same
block again. You will see men
dragging carts around filed with
cardboard, writing small poems on
the boxes in which theylive, the
reallly ofthe stretsisnot
something that canbe escaped.
The people who have the means to
donot do anything about i
because they are more concerned
with their own situation, People
here are too concerned here with
day-to-day survivaltothink about
other things. People arent
concerned with the future becouse
they must survive today Because of
condi
this, everything falls shit. Sao
Paulaisaplace where tis very
dllcull to notice the good thingsin
the street, we only notice the bad
things because there are so many
them. Everywhere you look you
see kids huffing glue, people
begsing, people who are
delormed. We can stand there
painting awallandaman willcome
‘up tous out ofthe garbage and
startexplaining his life story tous.
Everywhere youlook are the
homeless, itle kids and babies
living onthe street. The things that
‘ve paint are often a result of seeing
that type o thing inthe street. We
‘often paint simply forthe people in
the streets andifit makes ther life
alittle easier knowing that wo paint
justforthem, and bring litle color
{othestreetsjust for them, itisa
‘means of excaping the reality ofthe
harsh word, These poople are able
tosee these big murals and know
ry A
that they are not excluded from the
rest ofthe world. We wantthem to
know that they are thought about.
Explaining to people outside of Sao
Paulo what goes on theres very
Ailiclt because the people who
live there dont know themselves
what’ going on. We suspect that a
lotol majorities arelike tha, that
people's main concernis for money
and survival. Everything that exists
must coexist, and Sao Pavlos 2
land of coexistence. There are
police who don't get paid shit and
bbocause ofthat they don't care
about what they're doing, Because
colthat everything else followsina
vicious cirele. The cops get
frustrated and steal rom people.
There are things in Brazil that are
dificult to explain. There are
‘people who are even poorer than
those in shantytoyns because at
least people there can scrounge
{food fromthe garbage. There are
ies
vty
s
people who are so poor that they
cannot even tind edible garbage, s
they find chunks ofeardboard and
learit up and boll, making soup
from cardboard. These people ere
s0poor they cannot even lve in a
shantytovn, they just get soaked
every ime itrans. They figure that
‘anything must be better than where
they re, any city, anything, They
pick up and move to shantytowns
and sometimes doa great deal
better That's why there are so
‘many shantytowns, because once
there, nobody can go higher Kids
‘who are born int that life dont
have the resources to go any
higher. They lve ther entire lives
that way. We paint because it
creates a portal into another world
that other people hopetully can
peer into in order to see another
lite and world that exists”
