Violin/ Answered Question
Expert: Stephen Derek
Subject: William Lewis and Son (?) violin
Question: Dear Sir, I have a mess of two contradictory labels in my violin. Hoping
that you are the one who can help me with, I'll try to describe them as
good as I can. The first one label (bass left soundhole) is without border
and say "Copy of / Antonius Stradivarius / faciebat Cremona 1713 / Made
in Western Germany" ("/" means new line). The other (right f hole) has a
rectangular border, on the left side has a picture of the scroll and below
the picture say "NO. 134 ("134" is handstamped in blue with bigger font)
". Right of the picture, the label say "Made Expressly For / William Lewis
WillLewissFront
and Son / Chicago, Illinois / in Germany". One tiny label turned upside
down with "5309" on it was glued over this label (with a few traces of
small amount of yellow glue spread around). The violin itself is 14" long and has a very nice
vintage rectangular hard case, grey/black outside and red plush inside. Thank you very much
for your knowledge and expertise, and for your precious time. With kind regards from Bosnia,
sincerely yours, Franc Andrejas
Answer: Without closeup photos I can not tell you what the quality of workmanship which i need to determine
