School Zoning System

The Indonesian government should stop implementing the school zoning system for a
while to re-evaluate this policy. The reason for this is because it lowers the chance for the
students to enter their intended schools. The government issued a policy that each school can
only accept registrants from outside the school zone as much as 10%. These 10% consist of
5% students who have an outstanding performance in their previous level and 5% students
with a special reason, which is the mutation of the parents’ work or resettlement. Due to these
limitations, the students have less opportunity to continue their education in the school that
they want. Furthermore, they experience lack of learning motivation because they are not
accepted in their desired school. This is proved by a study that shows the school zoning
system lowers the students’ motivation to 65%. At first glance, this policy seems to bring
justice to all schools in Indonesia. However, when we take a closer look, we will find that it
impacts the students learning negatively. Therefore, the government should not continue this
policy in the next academic year to re-think about it carefully.
