Some students prefer to take a gap year between high school and university,
to work or to travel.
Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

In this modern-day, people tend to pursue their study careers in their own way.
One of the popular trends nowadays -gap year is no more unfamiliar with
everyone, especially young adults. In particular, gap-year takers would have a
year-long break after graduate at high school to work or travel, then enroll in the
university. While it may sound new to someone, I believe that everyone should be
encouraged to embark on higher education whenever they want.

On the one hand, many students who have a gap year in their studies said that they
will never regret about what they’ve gained in that precious time. It’s the chance
for them to enrich life experiences, hone practical skills and explore the diversity
of cultures that exist on this planet. Life skills, for example, which are hard to learn
in the school curriculum, could be cultivated naturally. In addition, they also have
to be adaptable with independent life and learn a new language if they spend their
time abroad. Since there’re many high schools didn’t provide inadequate career
guidance for students, spend time attending vocational training courses or trying
many jobs would help them in identifying a suitable career path in the future.

On the other hand, people who defer tertiary education for one year are supposed
to lose their confidence and their interest in studying. They are likely to fall behind
in studies and endure peer pressure. Therefore, because of being distracted from
studying for too long, they might find it difficult to continue to learn formal
schooling. In fact, high school graduates can mainly do low-level jobs with little
income and do not bring much practical knowledge.

In conclusion, we can not judge people if they have a gap year in their studying or
not, the real knowledge and skills would be the most important part to focus on,
however it seems to me that the benefits of gap year are greater.
