Performance Notes

In this piece, breathing actions for each performer (without


their instrument, if applicable) are notated on a single-line
staff. An “up-bow” symbol indicates an audible inhale, a
“down-bow” symbol an audible exhale. In the baritone part,
exhales are replaced by whispered phonemes from the IPA
text above.

In the baritone part, falsetto is indicated by an “o” above a


pitch. Whistling is indicated by a square notehead. Vocal
fry multiphonics are written as octaves, with lower
notehead replaced by a diamond.
In each instrumental part, X noteheads indicate air sounds
made with the instrument. In the bass clarinet part, these
are accompanied by a percentage above each note,
indicating the percentage of the sound that should be
pitch instead of air noise.

In the bass clarinet part, a “+” sign above or below a note


indicates a slap tongue. Multiphonics with diamond
noteheads in the upper parts are spectral multiphonics,
produced by overblowing the written fundamental. The
pitches with diamond noteheads are individual partials
that should be brought out.
