RESEARCH WRITING IN THE SCIENCES

• Course focus:
Research Writing in the Sciences* is a short course that aims to develop postgraduate students’ (master’s and
PhD) literacies in science. The core focus of the course is writing for journal publication, peer-review, and
engaging with a public audience through writing (including conference abstracts and science communication).
• Course structure:
Given the impact of COVID-19, the course will be offered in an online format and will encompass interactive
learning and engagement. You will have the opportunity to submit a written product of your choice for
feedback from the course facilitators.
• Course date:
The course will take place for the duration of one week, from 15 – 19th November, from 09:00 – 14:00 on the
Zoom platform. Course resources will be available on Vula.
• Who can apply?
Postgraduate students in Science, Engineering and the Built Environment, and Health Sciences. However,
students in other faculties, and other universities, are welcome to apply if you think the course will be
appropriate given the nature of your research. Course applications are open until Friday 12 November 2021.
• How to apply:

Language Development Group, Academic Development Programme, CHED, UCT. There is a small course fee,
however, a fee waiver is possible upon request if needed (see course application for further information).
